    Ill back rover rescue.

    while you CAN rebuild most of the rover engines in situe.. you only do it if you absolutely have to.. the quality and ease of the work is a lot better with the block out.

    Steve, a-OK with what you say. Necessary repair to a 95 Tdi last year was done sump off. The rear main bearing shells and T seals were done last, with the other main bolts sagged to get the clearances. Shim let the T seals ease in. The only hassle I had was keeping the area +/- dry from oil seep from higher in the block. I think the trick was to minimize the vertical movement on the crank when putting the top shell in, thereby protecting the rear crank seal.

    But you got to know, though, in a previous life I was a fruit bat!
