    Advice Re. Buying Discovery

    Hi All,

I'm going to have a look at a Discovery today and was wondering what I should look out for. It's a 1995, 380,000 km Gas/Petrol V8 with a busted water pump. He has a new pump to replace it.

Any ideas on what to look for and what price to pay?

    Cheers,
    John

    The cooling lines + system.
    The cabin heater for leaks.
    All rubber of tie rods
Your old greaser clothes / A large rug and about an hour of your time looking for where all the oil leaks are .... Where ever you find them will = work $ required
+ the whole car in general

Thats a lot of km's imho.

Unless its very cheap, i would stay away.
Alarm would also go off if the water pump is gone and the chances of a cooked motor are very high but with that many K's, a new motor is not too far away.
Remember also though that the rest of the car will have done high km's also so whole car is pretty well worn.

Have a look at Young Angus on here, he is selling his V8 on gas and by all accounts, he has spend a small fortune and its running sweet atm.

    Just a thought.

you'd want it to be a super cheap deal.. km's are super high!! check belts are not to warn, if water pump is gone, you may be looking at heat damage to engine, radiator service may be due... breaks and bearings.. and look for oil leaks, particularly on cooler lines..

Really you buy Ks before end of life in a used car.
This one does not have many.
I would be looking for a good straight body with no rust, so look under carpets , and at the rear floor especially, around the skylights and at the bottoms of the doors(lumps)
Virtually everything will have to be replaced within say 50KK-100KK.

My advice would be to look for one with under 160KK if possible.

This one I would pay maybe 2-3K for if registered and budget 8-10K for repairs.

Trans -3k ( if auto), engine 5K, transfer -1k, axles/diffs 1.5K,plus all the "little " bits like electrics etc.

    Regards Philip A

    Hi,

Thanks for the info. Am now going to look later this week. It's very cheap and he says it's straight and rust free, and it has a new radiator. He also was careful not to cook it.

    Cheers,
    John

    I think you were lucky.
Buying a $3000 car and than spending $10-15K on it, its still not worth $15K.

I spend a zillion on my Disco and sure its good, its definately not worth what it owes me and if I add up what I spend, I wonder what the heck got into me.

I once paid $13k for a 88 RRC. I paid top dollars but it was top condition and spend another $8k on it.
Sold it for $10K and the guy that bought it is still very happy, in 5 years all he ever has done is service and done new brake rotors.

In other words, buy a good car to start with, make sure the history on it is not just relating to oil changes and from a good foundation you will get good mileage.
Its worked for me and I am onto car no 73 this wednesday.

    Lots of stamp duty there!!!
