I'm not into deep mud holes these days, just the river crossings in the high country and eventually up the cape, just looking for the best vehicle for these conditions in it's natural state. I use a car bra and wd40 etc. I want the most bush rugged vehicle.

For water crossings you want the least possible electrics.
V8's have electrics and in my experience water will get in places previously not thought possible.
Its the fine spray under the bonnet that can also upset matters and holes in fire walls that have not been sealed that will quickly soil carpets etc and can get into electrics under the seat or cd stackers etc.
Knowing where the air intake is on a tdi without a snorkel i wouldnt be sitting in water for too long, with a properly sealed snorkel then windscreen height is no problem.
We have done deep water crossings before.
On a club trip, various vehicle models suffer in different ways.
First and formost, a snorkel is highly recommended.
Secondly, a car bra or tarp for deep crossing is very advisable.
A few reasons, the water around the engine area can cause the radiator fan to chop the water, thus is some cases a blade will come off or breakup and hit the radiator core.
Well, electrics always give you issues from time to time.
ECU units on some models can be affected, etc etc.
Bottom line, check to depth, then suggest wrap a around the front of the car.
Some of the diesel models without ECU etc, do not suffer as much as some V8 models and td5, and later tdi models.

You mention the later tdi models, what's the difference between models that make some better than others?

I have lost count of trips l have been on where select vehicles encounter issues with ecu or the like, once been in deep muddy water filled holes and river/creek crossings.
I own both cars with heaps of computers and tech, and one D1 that does not.
I would not put my D3 in the drink up to the windscreen, unless l was certain l would not suffer issues after the fact.
Thats the risk l would have to take in this instance.
I don't think any of the tdi motors had ecus to run them I've got a 98 D1 and thats all mechanical 99 was the D2 and thats when the TD5 came in with the ecu
