    Question 3.9 V8 engine swap or rebuild old one?

    Hi all,

    Did the head gaskets (possibly some more damage) on my 96 disco a couple weeks ago. The engine was a pretty tough 3.9 v8 with 230k on it. Also had it converted to duel fuel with 2 scuba gas tanks under which is pretty handy.

    A bloke has also just given me his 97 disco (a year newer) with only 201k on the clock. He said it hadnt been used for a good year and wanted to get rid of it. Now the tough part - to do an engine swap or just rebuild mine?

    pros/cons.

    - new engine has done 30k less
    - new engine is a year newer
    - new engine runs strong (as i drove it from his place to mine) and is a lot quieter
    - my engine has a pretty sticky lifter and a couple of other sounds here n there
    - new engine did stall once when changing drive to reverse (most probably a tuning issue due to lack of use)

    Thinking of doing the swap and just hitting up a full gasket change and flush out and see how she goes.

    Any Thoughts?!?!?

    Sounds like the other engine would be the go...you could always put your old one back in the other car and get it running to sell it, or just keep it for parts if you've got room to leave another car lying around.

    You can buy my V8 too if you want another option I'm selling and it's a beauty

    already got a couple of V8s - dont think i need a 3rd! haha. I do have a full interior including a jump seat with all brackets and seat belt, lenses, switches, a chassi, 4 original land rover alloys etc if anyone need anything around the cairns region... otherwise it seems that old mate Tip will get the lot!

    and yeh im thinking that the swap may be the way to go too.

    I think you should put the other engine in while you do a full rebuild on your one.
    That's what i would do anyway, keeps the car on the road and gives you time to be picky about parts and prices.
