    block warp question

after a little overheating exercise in a 300TDI I have come to discover a 0.002 mm dip in the block between 2 & 3 cylinder measured with a make shift straight edge (brand new steel ruler) run straight from back to front of the block (hanging over a little either side) using imperial feeler gauges.

    Question 1:
Do I measure it across (top left to bottom right/bottom left to top right) rather than straight (which I have done due to the old gasket pieces stuck to the block at this stage)?

    Question 2:
Is this either - "enough for the block to be ****ed for life"
    - "thick gasket can fix it for a certain period of time"
or - "she'll be right" scenario?

    Question 3:
In the much preferred of above answers, should I use the thickest gasket available or "normal" (as in according to piston protrusion, which I have yet to nut out)?

Crossing my fingers here for a positive answer, but please guys.... don't hold back.

    Thanks for any advise
    Cheers,

    Simone

double check the ruler, slide it along to a different position and make sure that the dip doesnt follow the ruler.

.002mm is within tolerance But check the head the same amount of "dip" on the other side will cause you problems in the long rung.

yep most times just aim for the thickest gasket.

    Sure it's mm?

25 fold difference between the two. Important to confirm the unit of measurement used. .002mm is vvv small in block deck terms.

But it's not unusual to have to deck 300tdi block that's be badly overheated.

Bloody hell!! (excuse my language).... here I am trying to concentrate so hard to clarify and end up typing the wrong thing...

unfortunately its not mm it is 0.002 INCHES.
    there.
Just been out and tried to clean the rest of the gasket off as good as possible to measure across - either way it is 0.002 INCH, but really just - measuring only slightly off center it raises to 0.0015, which I guess doesn't sugar the pie here...

Anyhow... I am assuming the worst

Engine out, strip it down, have a hearty breakfast because you'll need to be strong to lift the cast iron lump of a thing and take it to be decked - MINIMUM off to get it flat.

Good luck (with the lift and the fix!)
