    I'm picking up bad vibrations

    Hi all

Since fitting a two inch spring lift and heavy duty shocks to the Disco I have this weird vibration.

It sounds exactly like running over those ridges on the side of the road that are meant to wake you up if you have fallen asleep and are veering off the road.

It sounds like it is coming from under the car behind the drivers seat.

It only happens when the car is coasting. i.e. not when accelerating and not decelerating.

Does anyone have some ideas I can try to fix this?

    TIA

Check all of the Uni-Joints on the Tailshafts, NOW, If you keep driving with buggered Uni-joints you can do Thousands of $'s worth of damage, Regards Frank.

I'm with Tank, probably a unit joint. Rear joint on front propshaft would be my first guess.

What you have done is quite common..

You have taken a vehicle at standard or even slightly sagged height, one which has done multiple kilometers with the uni-joints, and other components running in a certain 'base' position for years.

You have now lifted the vehicle, changing these parts operating angles, which has induced the vibrations you are feeling. You need to replace the front and rear uni-joints, and if fitted a new roto-flex and center spigot.

    Then you'll be running sweet

(You have recently greased all the points on the front and rear shafts? Including the slip joints? )

I'm with Tombie on this one mate. I have to change to a double carden joint before i head to the high country at easter.. Mine vibes bad at 100kms but can get bad at 80. I have a 3" lift and climbing so i know it needs to happen but with my research with only a 2" lift you will just need to renew your uni's as they are more than likely worn and once you lifted the disco you changed the angle on the uni's therfore showing that they are in fact worn to the standard or sagged level your disco probably run at for the last few years. Check the lastest 4wd action or custom 4x4 one or the other has a write up on drive shaft uni's makes it clean cut to what ur gonna need. then check the forum for similar i'll put money on it that its on the money new Uni's and you'll be smiling

    Thanks all,

    So, two more questions:
    (1) How much are rear and front uni joints going to cost me approximately? (I'm on a very tight budget)
    (2) Is this something I can do myself, with my limited mechanical experience?

edit: Also, do I need to replace the rubber thingy on the end of the tailshaft? It looks fairly new if that helps.

wouldnt think they would be more than $30 an end and basic tools and common sense rules with uni's.
Undo the clips tap out the old shells..
be careful when putting in the new uni's or you will spill the needle roller bearings and never get it into place. I'm sure there has to be a few different threads on it in this forum. But its the same with all uni's so just google it. To be honest it aint rocket science but if you dont do it right your gonna get worse vibes than before. I learnt from trial and error in my torana days. I have found the cheapest place in Vic for bearings etc is the bearing wholesalers.. a few stores around google again and a few calls save leg work.
Done a few in my time if you get stuck give me a call. I'll pm you my details now

    Thanks again all

So, I was thinking of tackling the rear prop shaft first, and replacing both the rubber coupler, and the front uni.

When replacing the front uni should I replace just the bearings, or the spider arrangement as well?

Also, is this something I should get from my local LR dealer, or will any old bearing supplier know what I need?

Cheat.. Get the part number from you LR dealer and goto a bearing shop.. always gonnna save you a lot of $$$ example front hubs for my wifes jeep.. genuine $600 at bearing wholesalers $100..
thats a lot of slabs or extra mods
I'm sure there are similar stores in Perth too... pays to ring around get the details from LR so you sound like you know what your talking about at the other shops. They will generally discount it if you buy the lot from them unless you get a **** behind the counter
