    steering box question

hey fellas question iv got 95 v8i 3.9,
my power steering im not sure but i think is leaking, after alot of hard turns in the forest of gembrook i came home and left the old girl for a week yesterday i found a large dripp puddle slighly dryish not a constant heavy is wet puddle, i tryed to wipp it down gave the motor a good run and left over night, cam back to a bit bigger than a cd size slow slow dripp

i can see its from the input shaft off the steering wheel, now i will try the stop leak first see how it gose what stuff is good enough to try , also is there any place melb or sydney where i can buy the input shaft seal only instead of 1-200 on an entire kit
    cheers matty

    Hi Matt
changing the seals (and bushes as that is why it is leaking) is really a job for the experts with all the correct tools. a remanufactured jobby is the easiest way to go.

also check that it isn't a leaking hose joint and running down to the steering box giving the appearance of the steering box leaking.

You can get an input seal and you can change it yourself, however it is not for the faint hearted or short tempered .
The issue is to replace the circlip which holds the seal in place as the seal wants to push it out all the time. AFAIR I made a "special tool" ,which again AFAIR was a tube spanner the correct OD , whcih I had to grind down so that it juuuust fitted inside the steering box shaft hole, get the circlip, just inside the hole with circlip pliers , then whacK it just right with a persuader , while holding tongue in precisely the correct position.
On about the 200th attempt I got it

It says that the Lucas Stop Leak is for Rack and Pinion systems, how long have you had it in your Disco, are there any issues with using it as I am at the end of my teather trying to trace a leak my D1 power steering.

I have it in about 2 monthsand some 4000kms so far . I syringed out most of the remaining fluid and put a bottle of Lucas Stop Leak in.
My steering box suddenly started leaking 3 days before I had to go up country to work so it was the quickest solution. I ordered and got a complete set of seals which are still in the glovebox.
I have been meaning to get the seals done but have not had any free time to do it.
To me it doesnt read that it is just for rack and pinion but that it corrects rack and pinion problems.
If your steering box is leaking so bad then give it a go, you have nothing to loose.

    Best of luck

But if its like mine the seal has gone so hard, it's not going to swell enough.
