At the front RHS of the block on a ledge beside the injection pump.
I'm just getting the new Tdi registered in VIC and the silly garage that did the RWC couldn't find the engine number and I know Vicroads will scream bloody murder if I can't find it. I haven't had a good look myself yet but if the garage couldn't find it then it's probably out of my league too...anyone know where to look?

1. Generally I find there is a wiring harness running over the engine number making it hard to see. But yeah, it's at the front facing up, near the thing with all the little pipes coming off it.
2. It's also on the lpg compliance plate.
Ahh okay well that's good then, I'll have a scratch around and if I can't find the actual one I'll write it on the RWC from the compliance plate (or from the rego paper I got from Big Guy when I bought it off him). According to Vic Roads they don't even need to see the vehicle so long as the RWC is there and the number plates, vin number and engine number all match up to what info they have on its SA registration. I don't want to give them any reason at all to waste any more of my time than I'm sure I already will waiting in their ridiculous waiting room.
on a ledge on the block half hidden by the air cond compressor should start with an 'L'
Have you got a Owner Manual? Lots of info in them! If you haven't, give Greg Ellis at AMV a call and get one from him.

In your owners handbook, 2nd page is the vin and engine number.
That is if you can't find it on Gas compliance plate or on block that is.
Oops...guess I didn't check the owners manual. I wanted to be a big boy and find it all by myself
There sure is a lot more stuff under the bonnet of a Tdi than what seems to be under the bonnet of the V8, at least on a D1. I've heard (and seen a few pics) that the later models have even more crap in the engine bay!
