I think i ruined my transfer case???

as the heading suggests, i think i may have ruined my transfer case.

ok, i'll try to describe what is happening

there is a surging feeling going on when im driving (ususally 50km/h+) when i depress the clutch the surging disapears. I know its definately not the engine, because the "engine sound" never changes (ie its normal), its more i can feel this odd pulse..

only thing i can think that i may have done wrong is that i fit 31.5/10.5/15 tyres to the rear on Monday afternoon, the fronts have 30.5/9.5/15, my understanding is that the front wheels are travelling faster and the rears arnt travelling as fast, and something dodgey is going on inside the transfer case...

    thoughts?

i really only started to notice this properly yesterday on my way home from work, (27km each way)

when i got home from work tonight, i put my spare (31.5/10.5/15) on the passenger front (i dont have a second one of that size to put on the drivers side front) and took the D1 for a test drive. The pulsing/surging feeling is still present.

has anyone ever experienced this before?

we're on a budget, so if i remove the front prop shaft, would this help me get by till i get a new transfer box? or would something more sinister happen as a result?

    many thanks

    eddie

and the main reason why i didnt buy the same size for the fronts is because just didnt have the money at the time. So i was going to wait until i could pay for it

There's nothing inside that'll really give and surge. The centre diff is fully mechanical so it's just "differentiating" constantly instead of when cornering.

Putting the spare on will only achieve the same thing on the front diff with L/R running at different speeds so "differentiating" constantly as well. The only thing I can think of is maybe tyre slip, but you'd be hearing it as well.

hmmm... well when i put my spare on the front passenger side, i took it for a drive through the streets etc... around the corner from my place, i engaged diff lock and low range and drove 100-200 meters, turned into a side street, (i could feel the tyres grabbing to the road as such). then i selected high range and unlocked the CDL. then the strangest thing happen, the car wanted to steer to the right (steering wheel wanted to turn to the right)

thinking that something bad was going on, i turned into a drive way to turn around etc. but as i reversed out of that driveway and started to drive home, that problem disapeared.

so my assumtion was that the reason why it pulled to the right was because the right hand front tyre is still the 30.5/10.5/15 and the rest of the tyres around the car are the 31.5/10.5/15

All tyres "have" to be the same size or you will cause the gears in your transfer case to bind. I had the same problem in my wifes jeep only the tyres had worn uneven it shortened the life of the transfer case ten fold. I replaced it about a month later when it let go totally.. My best advice is get a cheap pair of 31's for it until you can afford the other 2 to complete the set.. otherwise your up for a rebuild or second hand transfer case..

The CDL did not disengage as it was "wound up". When you reversed it disengaged as you reduced the wind Up.
This is quite normal on LT95 and LT230. When I used to test my diff lock on my old 77 I would have to put a couple of wheels on grass and spin them sometimes to disengage the CDL.
You may have already had some problem with the centre diff planetary gears thrust washers and the different tyres have highlighted it.
The manual for the old LT95 said it could tolerate 10% difference which is far greater than what you have but not such a good idea for a long period.

    Might be a longshot but....
A few weeks ago I started to get a grab and release on the D1. I was towing at the time (empty though). Wasn't noticable when not under load. It turned out to be a collapsed pinion bearing in the front diff.
