NRMA recommended;
Discovery 1999 onwards 1000CCA
Defender 850CCA
Why does the Disco with the same engine need a bigger battery than the Defender?
Is it to wind the windows up, adjust the seats, heat the seats, warm the coffee in the cup holders, power the sound system or some other reason? :p
This is for the Td5 engine from 1999 (in a Disco), this thread is for a 98 300Tdi engine.
I'm pretty sure the original Disco 300Tdi battery is only around 550ish cca.
A bit more oomph is always nice for cranking, so around 650cca is usually enough for the 300Tdi IMO.
The last couple I have had have also been Supercharge: Supercharge Batteries - Car Batteries, Maintenance, Expanded Grid Technology
I always go direct to their warehouse and get a great deal on the Gold 650cca one (MF80D26R).
Probably need to replace the start battery this winter.
What is the best (highest cca and vibration tolerant) battery that will fit in a D1 tdi in 2017?
the stock battery for a disco tdi is an n55 format battery, pic a brand and go for it, you get what you pay for.
in a defender its an N70.
you can shoe horn an n70 into a disco (dual batteries is easier)
and you can just squeeze an n85 into a defender (you can just get 2 n70s into the.
Then N70 size spec is valid for all shed class upto the fords (I never bothered to check out the seat box spacing under one of those yet so it may still be valid but your milage may vary)
In May 2011 I said:
The revival of this thread has saved me the trouble of checking to see how old my Defender battery is now.
That battery is still there and still doing its job.
I recently bought a cheap volt meter that plugs into the accessories socket. I couldn't resist the $3.98 price. :)
According to that, the battery is at 12.6 or 12.7 volts when the vehicle has been sitting for the couple of days and the ignition is first turned on. I assume at that stage the glow plugs are drawing some power. When the engine is running it shows 13.6 to 13.9.
So I am happy with what I bought.
NS70X Century here.
720CCA.
That's all I could get so late in the pre prep from supercheep near me.
Would have loved an Optima or something more like that, but never mind.
It's not cold enough to push its cranking power ability now, but it did dip below 10 degrees at the campsite on three mornings, and no problem with mine bursting into life in half a sec!
I'll see how it goes in the coming months.
Brother had a truck sized N70ZZ (or whatever) in the TD5(just bought), and it had one issue cranking on the first cold morning.
No idea why, but then on the other two cold mornings it gave no trouble.
On the Century website they list the NS70 and NS70X as the two compatible products for the 300 TDi D1.
X model has 720 CCA, non X model has 650.
My old battery(still ok, but I didn't trust it) was a 650CCA battery of some description from RACV years back.
My current start battery is an N50 size supercharge allrounder 650 cca
N70 wont fit due to air con plumbling but an N55 probably would as not much difference in size to N50 based on dr google.
It wont last its 3rd winter.....that is pretty ordinary....isnt it?
Hard to find any with better than 650cca in that size. I did see an optima the other day that had around 900 cca. Only about a hundred dollars more expensive.
NS70 will tho.
Obviously not as big as a N70, but still more than enough CCA to start a diesel on a cold morning.
it is a tight fit, but easily doable.
See the Century site for a list of NS70 batteries.
