    Potential D1 Purchase

Had a D1 inspected today. The following were found.

Any showstoppers here? It's an auto with low K's.

Vibration Damper on front differential is loose
Engine oil leaks around engine sump, transmission bell housing, and power steering hoses
Flexible webbing around exhaust engine pipe is broken
    Rear wiper not working.

It will have to up to a long drive home. The timing belt has just been done.

    Cheers.

The only one I'd be seriously worried about is the Bell Housing leak. It could be a rear main. The others are pretty standard....

Nothing too serious, but it depends on where the leak on the bell housing is, if it is the rear main the gearbox will have to come out, $$$ in labour.
Having said that mine has many more faults than that and is still going!
I guess it depends on if you are happy with it, and if you can negotiate the price due to these issues.

    Good luck.

Sounds pretty good if that's all that's wrong with it.
Timing belt just done is a plus. Did they use the upgrade kit? I would assume so.
Was it inspected by someone who knows Landies?

The oil leaks... peh! You can fix them over time, as I have done, providing that the oil's not flowing out. No brake vacuum pump leak! You're ahead already!!

Out of curiosity, what does 'low k's' stand for in this case?

    Hi Gooseneck,
You are crusing, a few oil leaks, normal. When you get the inclination take the engine out and fix all the leaks, give the engine bay a bit of a clean up, easy. Personally I would rather take the engine out than take the gearbox out, any day. Depends on what facilities you have available and how involved you want to get.
I drove a D1 300Tdi back from Sydney to Perth on three and and three quarter cylinders, got a bit scary at Broken Hill when the turbo pipe connecting the manifold to the inter-cooler started leaking a drip of oil every now and again, drive to the conditions and you could drive round Australia, just make sure you take some oil with you.

all sounds good. oil weep could be simply sump gasket. the rest are just normal running.

anything else you could live with.

It all sounds normal, if it doesnt leak it must not be a landie.

I noticed no one has mentioned about rust? Have you pulled the carpets up especially in the front to see what the floor is like, this could give you a good indication also on how well the windscreen is sealed. The alpine windows also are worth a closer look. Does it have a sunroof or two? Pain in the a$$ to have as most people complain more about them than enjoy them, the roof lining how is that fairing as they can drop.

I dont think you mentioned year of maufacturer as some other members may have other ideas.
Also depending on the price all the above may not be important right away.

    hope that helps...
