the handbook says it is a auto fluid temp warning light, thats as much as I can help you with, in my manual tdi it comes on with the key at ACC or just after you start the car as part of the circut test proceedure along with the brake light etc.
98 disco tdi auto transmission...
this warning light came on, I assume its to do with transmission...
question is..
what?
I have checked levels, if anything its a bit to much.. it was low at first very low.. but I topped it..
I had been off road 2 days ago, very very muddy... perhaps a dirty sensor? if so.. where is the sensor so I can clean it..

thats ade, mine doesn't go off...
so maybe its to do with a circut thats broken..
since the temp could not be hot.. it was on when the outside temp was 0.2C
the tranny temp censor is located passenger side of the radiator, at the lowest point, just abover chassis rail, it should have a rubber cap over the plug and its connected to a tranny cooler pipe which connects to the cooler, hope this helps
I think it is also hooked up as a TransferCase temp warning as well. not sure where the T/C temp sensor is?
Mine came on whilst doing some decent, but not extreme, low range touring in the High Country. Just what you don't want to see when miles from anywhere. Left it sit for ages, washed the transmission cooler fins, as we had found a bit of mud along the way, but nothing ever seemed to get hot. Even after not using the car for a couple of days the light was still on.
Jumped on the web and ordered a couple of replacement senders (Part#8510043) for under $50 from the UK. Simple swap out of the sender, it is screwed into the junciton of the auto transmission cooler line to the transmission coller itself. Just make sure to get the brass washer off the old one, otherwise you have to remove the new one again, to put the washer back on. Ask me how I know! I didn't even need to drain the fluid it was that quick a change-over. Now, no more light!
my 93 auto V8 was comming on when towing.didnt seem to be related to anything.
the switch is on the cooler pipe next to the engine sump.I have no aditional cooler.
down shifting the light would go out.the temp gauge would raise to 3/4.I could hold onto the pipes.so i repaird the earth wiring to the battery and retension drive belts.replaced the thermostat.
temp gauge never goes over 1/2.light hasnt come on.
OK, just had a crawl under the girl now, in the lovely Melbourne weather, and got a couple of snaps for you.
The first one probably gives the best detail as to where the sender is located. In the second one, the sender has the two wires running into the black rubber cap. This cap does a so-so job of keeping water out when doing deep water crossings.
Hope these help.
ahh, when I unplugged it a whole log of water came out... so I guess I found the problem.. need to order a new one..
there is a plug like that mid way down the disco also, that isn't plugged into anything... is it meant to be plugged into something.. I can't find the male part if it is..
