Had the same problem when Dad had a head gasket done. The Mech forgot to reattach the tube. Ran fine though the city, but once we hit the hills it was dead as a maggot.
it starts fine the crack pressures where around 200 atmospheres
do you think its more likly that its the injectors at falut then the tappits?

Did you at anytime, disturb the accelerator lever on the injector pump?
If this lever has been taken off its spindle, the spindle can rotate. It then must be then be reloaded lightly back against the spring inside the injector pump.
If the injectors are still suspect, after going back over the tappet settings and checking for any lines leaking in air, I would be trying another set of injectors to test the motor.
What colour smoke does the exhaust have when it is faulting?
You haven't got a rag sucked inside the air induction system somewhere, have you? look what I found in the intake manifold of our D1 after it started running rough and blowing black smoke! :eek:

( :wasntme:) either, as it was down on power since the time I had brought it, I did a check of the intercooler and did a timing belt kit change, then the troubles started after it was all assembled. After a panic attack, a strong coffee and a forced session of cool logic, I determined by the black smoke that the airway was blocked somewhere!
To cut a long story short, I found a rag jammed in the valve port on number four cylinder, where did it come from? I don't know, because that cloth wasn't one that I used. My best guess is that a grease monkey had it jammed inside of the bottom of the intercooler and when I looked at the intercooler for any trace of oil, it was tucked out of sight inside the bottom tank and moving the intercooler about was enough to let it move when I started the motor.
By the way this work was done when I first brought the Disco, it had about 420,000 kilometres on it, now has 511,000 kilometres and it runs
beautifully.

the max no load rpm's is about 4500.
so its not the throttle position then....
gunna have to have a long hard think on this one...
Hmm - could it be your injector pump is on the way out, and the adjusted injectors make life hard for it?

Could be that its now starving for fuel, is there a fuel supply blockage anywhere?
As you did say, there is no smoke and it is running out of power.
If as suggested, the injectors are not working correctly, they may not be opening up enough of their second stage, and could be that the injector pump is not supplying the required amount of pressure.
There again, by substituting the injectors with known good ones, should tell you if the trouble is the pump or the adjusted injectors.
