Not sure about the hum but the clunk is normal (as long as it isn't horrendously loud). Mine does it occasionally but had it all checked and no issues. Someone else will give you the finer details but it should be ok.
Hi guys, dont mean to spam (I posted a thread about travelling in a disco) but I had a couple of mechanical questions as well and thought a different thread would be a bit neater.
Just a couple of things ive noticed as I'm getting used to my disco and learning all its sounds etc, sometimes there is a loud clunk as I shift into drive or reverse (auto) does this mean bad news for my transmission? Sometimes when I start it it also starts and then stalls, not often and mostly cold, which I was just putting down to the choke not kicking in quick enough, is this a regular issue?
My main concern however is a noise that has only just started happening. When I get to around 60kp/h there is a deep, resonant humming that starts. Its not constant, and it doesnt keep rhythm. It sounds like its coming from the front left area. The sound doesnt change with engine revs, for eg I can do 60 going down a hill in neutral and it will still be the same, however it does get more high pitched as the speed increases. I'm worried it is the diff, thoughts?
Thanks again

Might be diff but could easily be a wheel bearing. See if the noise increases if you turn left or right - if you are turning right the pressure will be greater on the left, if its noisy points to the left for bearings, vice versa if you are turning left, pressure is on right. Its a place to start. You can also check by jacking up each corner to check for rumbly bearings by listening and feeling vibrations - its pretty common for them to go, when the hardening goes off they get worse quickly.

the clunk going into drive or reverse would more than likely be the output shaft of the transmission there is gear that slides over the spline witch drives the transfer, both this and the output shaft wear out due to insufficient oil (bad design). to fix this they can be replaced and cross drilled to allow better oiling.
or you can just leave it if it's not to bad, with a auto there is constant pressure and it wont knock every time you change gears like in a manual and damage the drive line.
Before you head off, change all oils, transfer, diffs ,auto etc, flush the radiator and replace inhibitor check all your wheel bearings and and grease, check your hoses and belts, then you know you have more reliability on your trip and not any suprise breakdowns from avoidable things. It will also show the condition of things by the appearance of the oils that come out
Hi mate, I'm doing the same trip in a similar car! To fix idle issues you need to clean the maf sensor with electrical component spray, then check your tps is set right. Do a search for tps settings and there is a PDF for it.
I did mine and it is sweet as now. Purrrrrrs.
Check your water and oil everyday on the trip. Make it a habit, you'll be right.
All I need now is somewhere to carry all the fuel it's gunna need!![]()
Check your engine and gearbox mounts, tighten up all the suspension bolts and check condition of bushes and A frame balljoint.
