    Cat Story?

    Hi Guys
I'm new to this forum but have had V8 Landrovers in UK since 2000. I'm looking to buy a V8 Discovery 1 but don't know how Australian spec D1's differed from UK vehicles. I'm particularly interested to know When Catalytic converters were first required on D1s for the Australian market. I'm looking at a 1997 3.9 and it doesn't appear to have Cats. Is this right?

In the UK when the Cats were first introduced on the V8i, provided the vehicle still satisfied the current emissions regulations it didn't matter if they were fitted or not. My D1 was a 1993 and I was legally able to remove them. By 1995 the Emissions regs were stricter and the cats had to be fitted and would not pass an MoT (read RWC) without them.

How are the regs here? What years do they have to be fitted? Could I be buying problems with this "Catless" 1997 D1?

    Can anyone help?

    Cheers

    Gromit,

I'm pretty sure that the AUS spec for a D1 is cat-less.

Someone more knowledgeable than myself will probably come along and say exactly when they were introduced (probably D2 at some point).

You'll probably also find that the RWC is much less strict than the good old MOT (I left there 4 years ago!).

Any V8 with an 8.13:1 CR which is basically most of the 3.9's to around '93 - '94 were non cat.
The later 9.35:1 CR were all cat which is basically anything known as the 4.0L.
Basically, check the CR ratio stamped on the front LH bank just behind the alternator to find out what CR it is.

MY D1 V8 is a 98 model, and is the 9.35:1. Still no cat.

The 4.0 was not fitted to D1s - D2s and P38s only (oh and you can have 3.9s with 9.35 compression that were not 4.0s)

...Or any V8 RRC in this country up to the introduction of the P38a here in 1995.

Wow what a really helpful response! what a wonderful bunch of guys you are.

In reading between the lines and adding what I already know about UK D1's I'm now convinced as several responders have already said there must have been no Cats on D1's here in Australia. I've now looked at three two 97's and a 98. None of them had Cats. I know that UK 3.5 and 3.9 D1's were available in either low or High Compression versions so I think the CR might be a red herring. The UK ones all had Cats ever since the Fuel injection was introduced. The "4.0L" came in with the D2 and it makes logical sense that they would also have had Cats even in Australia.

Thanks again guys I feel much happier now with your input.

    Yeehaaaa!!!

    I'm off to buy a Disco 1!!!!!!

    Cheers

Yes, hence my statement "...later 9.35:1 CR were all cat which is basically anything known as the 4.0L."*

    I don't believe I said 3.9 neither was I referring to the D1...
