    Need to go faster!

    Hi there,

New to AULRO and fairly new to owning a Land Rover.

I have a white 97 Discovery 1 that I bought from a "mate" from down south around Easter time. Bought it over the phone without seeing it for $6000. He was a bloke I knew from Uni a few years back, he said he looked after it really well, up to date with services etc...

Not the case! Spent another $5000 in the first month of owning it on it to get it up to scratch. Replaced the Radiator, water pump, all hoses, fan, head gasket, had the head machined, timing belt, drive belts and pulleys, injectors... I think that is was all? Needless to say, he is not really a mate anymore!

But despite all this, it is a great comfortable ride, a very capable 4x4 and I love having a 4x4 in the NT that is not a Toyota or a Nissan!

Enjoying the Disco so far, learning lots! Although I do have a couple of queries that I would love some advice on.

My main issue is that after moving out to the NT 600km south west of Katherine, I have found that the Discovery just won't go fast enough or run efficiently on these long 130km roads.

    Poor thing doesn't like going above 120! If I sit on 120km/hr 25000rpm I can get 700-750km from an 80ltr tank. At 130km/hr or 3000rpm I get 550-600km from a tank.

I know it needs a good service and a tune up... It gets an oily diesel spray all over the back of it after a long trip... Can't be good! Will hopefully get that sorted in the next few weeks. It only really happens when I am pushing it at 130km/hr for an extended time.

Maybe I need some bigger tyres to gear it up a bit? I currently have 245 / 70 R16. It has a 2inch lift, so there seems to be a fair bit of room for a bit bigger tyre. But would a bigger tyre bring down the RPM’s when I sit on 130km/hr and save me fuel? Is there something else I should consider?

Also got a nasty oil leak that seems to be coming from the sump. Am I right in saying that the Discos don’t have a sump gasket? I’ll have a go at taking the sump of and using the gasket glue to fix it up. Any advice or things to watch out for when doing this job, or is it pretty strait forward?

    Cheers,

    Luke

I think, IMHO, for what it's worth, that you maybe expecting too much from your Disco, nearly 2 tonnes, shape of a brick and 2.5 litres putting out meagre horsepower.
I reckon if you feel the need for speed you should have gone the V8 route, I run my 300TDi Disco @ around 100/110klm/h and get good fuel consumption and I don't feel the need to push it any harder, but that's me, Regards Frank.

I know what ur thinking Luke with so far to travel in between towns and a high speed limit so you want to go for it. My V8 disco with 35's will sit on that all day but with very bad fuel consumption. I think your better off just slowing down a bit and enjoying good figures, But if you really want more power check out all the power chips and turbo/exhaust mods to give you a little more. But remember every little increase in HP will cost you oodles. So balance it up is it worth having more power for more speed at a high cost or are you better off leaving a bit earlier and cruising in with good mileage and just standard servicing? How far is the next town to you 4 - 5 hours drive?? I checked on google maps and Tennant creek looks like a long haul just to get there

Yeah, 3 hour to Top springs, then 3 more to Katherine. Long day in the car when you are going 110km. I did think that I might have to just put up with it. A couple of fair comments here. Cheers!

I know the feeling.my 200 tdi used to be happy at 120 but not at 130.these days with 300000 plus kms i dont have the heart to push her past 100.remember that outside temps are at the moment in nt are not good for machinery at all, personally i would find an aftermarket cruise control a good stereo and just put up with the time it takes to get anywere.

    my 95 300TDi at 100km/h @2900rpm will get 8.6 l/100km for a range of an estimated 960km

also from my transport days when you go over 80km/h you push twice as much wind as you do at 60km/h and the wind figures get worse in an upward curve as you go faster.
so at 110km/h you could be pushing 4 times as much air as you did at 80km/h
