    If your only doing 100kph @ 2900 there is something wrong, mine sits on 2250 rpm @ 100kph and 2500rpm @110 ?
With the auto you'll be lucky to get 850-900 per tank at 100kph.

Tacho is driven off the alternator, I wouldn't be concerned about what it reads

Could be defender T/fer box as I believe they are shorter?? That's why it show 2900rpm?
Still sounds wrong. even in 4th @ 100 would still be around 5000rpm.
Although if he is getting 900km per tank that puts it around the correct consumption of about 8.5l/100km and 2250rpm in 5th.

    2000rpm in 5th = 60km/h
i might have to go down the gateway for a strap to gauge more accurate readings on the tacho!!
will be back with more info

Bloody hooker creek - noooo Lajamanu, I spent years in that area on and off over about ten years, bac in the days that Frank dalton had Franks Bar and Grill at wave hill ( now Kalkaringi) between 1980 to 1990

oops reminissing, back to your problem. No idea, but you are in a very special part of Australia. but it sounds like you need to get it tuned to get it to a base line then start checking things out, compression etc.

The w terminal that feeds the tacho is taken from a field winding, some tachos have 3, some 4, if ther was that much slip, there'd be other bad symptoms, alt pulley size can be varied also
