    why is my 300 tdi getting so hot?!!

    I have had a frustrating problem with my 300tdi Disco for quite a while now. The problem is that if i tow anything or am pushing the disco up a long hill or even just pushing it hard on the highway it keeps getting to hot. By to hot i mean it will read up to 3/4 temp and if i keep going it will keep rising. I have tried nearly everything i can think of to fix it but still no joy. The work i have done to it to try and fix the problem is,

    New water pump
    New head gasket (head shaved and new valves)
    Cooling jackets and radiator rodded and cleaned.
    All new timing gear in the front end. (timing was out and we chucked a new kit at it while it was apart)
    New thermostat(s)

    This plus heaps more work and $ but still no different.

    The only things we can think of is,

    1. Radiator is stuffed even tho the guy who rodded it said it was fine
    2. Faulty or dodgy temp gauge (halfway through installing new one so hopefully get an accurate temp soon)
    3. 300tdi radiator and cooling system can't handle the mods i've done to the car. I know i get a lot of people telling me that that they can tow there 3000 tonne caravan around aus with their 300tdi, so why can't I? Looking at the front of my disco, with the light and bull bar, there really isn't good flow for air to the radiator so i'm wondering if i should change it somehow.

    I have boiled the motor once but when it happened my waterpump carked it and i had water and steam going everywhere. So now i always keep an eye on the temp gauge and always pull over when it starts to rise.

    If anyone has experienced a problem the same as this or has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.

    I've probably forgotten something, its been a long haul trying to sort it and i'm loosing the plot :S

    How is the power in the vehicle? Does it feel like it's laboring slightly under acceleration compared to a while ago?

    Reason I ask is it could be something else that's showing it's symptoms via the temp gauge - e.g. the engine is under load that it shouldn't be.

    About the only thing you haven't mentioned is the viscous fan coupling.

    Maybe yours is free-wheeling or not "locking" well?

    mine had same symptoms, reco radiator, fixed. Change fan hub while its apart

    Which end of the island are you and which beverage do you drink, Boags or Cascade?

    Similar experience, except i cooked mine, new radiator - didn't fix heating. I have since had viscous fan replaced (separate issue) and put an oil clean through the engine, but haven't really tried towing since. Did also rewire some of the condute from the spotties. I am interested in how it goes.

    It does sound like a radiator to me. Tdis are normally over cooled and shouldn't get hot like that. A good, brand new, ally core rad will cost about £125.

    Mine does the same thing - in hot weather if I run up a long (like many km) hill with a bit of a load, the temp will shoot up to the top eventually. It doesn't use water and cools down quickly once it's on the flat. My money's on the viscous fan. I've never heard mine kick in.

    Hi Adam. Had these exact symptoms too - show it any kind of hill or load and the temp would climb, had the radiator core replaced. I took it in to get rodded but it was just too blocked and old. An immediate difference. This was over a year ago now no issues at all, steady temp even fully loaded up the long hill to Ballarat from Melbourne. I do have lights and bullbar also, no issues.

    FWIW I had similar problems but a throrough cleaning, rodding etc and installation of appropriate replacement parts completely fixed it (and I have a winch and spot lights interfering with the airflow to the radiator)- so all I can suggest is a new or recored radiator.....

    ... all assuming of course, that your replacement thermostat is operating as it should - this could be the easiest thing to check and fix - why not take it out and do the same uphill run on which it has been overheating and see if there is any difference?
