    Thrust Bearings ???

    Hi Everyone,

Im currrently rebuilding my 1994 Discovery, I have purchased crank shaft bearings (shells) and have found that only one half of the thrust bearing actually fits. The fitting grooves dont line up?
After some reaserch and going through the old bearings that were removed only 1 thrust bearing was used.
My supplies informs me that this is common in older blocks and I should purchase another set of bearings and use a standard shell in its place.
Does this sound right to you guys?
Any help would be great as Im keen to get this back together asap.

If I recall right you have bought the wrong set, the correct set is a lot more expensive, with the cheaper ones you need 2 sets and had to grind off the tab off some of them to use them to line up.

    Ummmm,
    what am I missing,
Thrust bearing (bushing) accomodates for for and aft movement of the crank in the mains.
Main bearings (shells) accomodate for the size of the crank journals.

One you measure witha DTI the other with plastigauge.

Am I right in assuming that the oversize main bearings you are installing are two wide to accomodate standard thrust bushes? If so I would be hesitant to trust those mains? Do the new mains plasti in spec?

Most thrust bearings have an upper and lower shell, as you can see by the steel bearing cap which has a groove cut to accomodate the upper half, many bearing kits do not include both halves of the thrust bearing, you can use it with just the bottom thrust and standard bearing shell in the top half, will not cause any problems. However if your not happy take the bearings back and ask for the proper thrust bearing kit, Regards Frank.
