Hi Mate, ive just been through the same brake Drama, I have come to the conclusion, after going right through my disco Brake system, that they do not have a very good system, so what you have is what you have to Live With! SORRY HOPE IT HELPS.:cool:

Its funny how a car can be made and everyone claims it has fantastic 4 wheel Discs and how smooth they pull up. Then 10 years later they are supposed to be crap. Could it be that the other car makers have caught up? There is a lot of improvement in engineering and electronics over 10 years. Drive a 1950's car and see how good the brakes are. Mate gas a 1928 Dodge with only brakes on the back wheels! Imagine getting out of his 2006 Ford and getting into the Dodge!
changing to defa calipers is not a simple job of swapping one for the other
disco has 2 lines going to the front brakes defa only 1, I am going to see if a complete swap of the defa master cylinder with the calipers works or not?
In another thread apparently by 95 discos had gone to single brake lines to the front as well but I haven't had that confirmed yet I.E. seen it with my own eyes
Blitz, I have just brought a 1996 Disco, Build Date March 96 with the same usual brake problems. It has definately got single brake lines to each wheel. 4 Piston Fronts and 2 Piston Rear. (only One Bleed Nipple on each Calliper);)Just confirming your question. Cheers.
My 95 D1 has always had brakes that dont have a lot of bite and much feel. My 02 D2 brakes on the other hand are much better and when I went to new rotors and ECB Black Stuff on the D2 it was a revelation compared to the Bendex I had on there and a bit better than stock when I got it new which was very good.
I have had the booster replaced on the 95 with a new one, but I am going to change pads to ECB Black and get back some better braking before I just get better breaking...

I've got a 97 with single brake lines, although there is the ABS line as well
Shepherd again... Sorry about delay, been resting in hospital. Yes vast improvment in brakes, I replaced the master cylinder, checked all pistons in calipers, they were good, servo vaccuum good, finally I took the HARD pads out all round and replaced them with TRW DB 1176 4X4 pads, this is what did the trick.
But be warned, they have improved the braking on mine around the city too something I'm very happy with "BUT" tow a light trailer down Kangaroo Valley via Moss Vale taking my time riding the brakes a bit, I pulled up half way down to let the dick johnson's of this world pass me AND I thought Holly-Smoke Batman, I'm on fire!
Smoke pouring from my front wheels. So there you have it,great if you don't abuse them. I think I'm still going to try to fit Defender calipers, athough, CAN ANYBODY suggest another PAD to try- would be the cheapest way out.

Then maybe it's your driving technique? Do you drop down to a suitable lower gear with the trailer on the hills & use engine braking to assist & if an auto do you realise you can? A lot of people are not aware you can.
Only problems I have had with my '95, is front left pad worn down to metal & a scored disc but that was probably my fault as I didn't react & have them looked at when the first squealing started.
New front discs & pads & all was ok. Have had the occasional seized pistons but after freeing up all was ok.
The brakes have never been a concern to me as living in the Mount Lofty Ranges I try to drive to suit the conditions & load & am not a 'tear arse driver on speed'.:D
In all, I am very happy with the Discovery brakes & they are the same as when I got her in '95.
I trust your hospital stay was beneficial, whatever you were in for.
Thanks blitz.... you say TRS in SA has Defender calipers for $125 ea, obviously at that price they are pre-loved. Do they garrantee them? Seeing as though I'll be ringing them to order the parts, and don't won't to sound like a complete jerk, is there anything in particular I should ask for ie : defender year model ? solid or vented discs? Anything else? Have you already done this conversion ? If so, was it worth the effort $$$$$ wise.
