DISCO SERIES 1 GOES GREAT- CANT STOP IT

    G'day.... Cant Stop It
Has anybody had trouble with the brakes on a series one being poor.
There seems to be plenty of pedal, but with extreme pressure applied in a crash stop, it almost is ......a crash. Seriously though would changing the pads to a softer material help?
I believe later series one or is it the series two had bigger calipers and/or discs, are they interchangable? I couldn't be that lucky, has anybody got any ideas on what I could do check for faults or upgrade the brakes.
I think it has hard pad linings in it at the moment I've done about 30K on them and they still have plenty left. When cold they squell like hell and thats when they don't want to pull me up. Even when hot there not great.
    Thanks..... Shepherd

Do you have ABS? Non-ABS brakes have 4-piston front and 2-piston rear. ABS vehicles have single piston front & back. I have non-ABS and no problems at all even with harder compound pads. Check the thickness of the discs as well as the pads.
Not sure if D2 brakes are the same as D1 ABS vehicles.

    cheers

From what I've been told on this forum the best you can go with a disco is to put ventilated discs and defer calipers. But if you can go better i would love to hear it. Mine would use a rolls royce as a brake if i let it

the squealing could be hard pads but also glazed disc.

mine had issues stopping in a straight line or locking wheels.
after 18 months its almost ok.

I'd be checking for loss of vacuum to the servo. My D1 with ABS has 4 pistons per front disc. After replacing all normal service parts, still not the world's best brakes. I certainly leave myself more braking room than in other vehicles.

Thanks Luke........... mine is non/ABS brakes, what would ventilated discs cost me?
I did read elsewhere that Defender discs and calipers might fit ( larger) Does anyone know "IF" and what model Defender might fit?????????????????

    not quite right, perhaps,
i have one of each, both april 95, same colour also, not that has anything to do with brakes!
    v8 no abs,
    300 tdi with abs,
calipers are the same on both.
    v8 stops really well,
    300 tdi also stops well,
but the difference is that the v8 no abs gives you the satisfaction of being able to push harder when you think you need to stop sooner than when you first put your foot on the brake [like when the excel in the on ramp to the freeway thinks she should stop]
the 300tdi with abs has good braking, but if you get in the same situation, that's all you get, there is no extra braking by pushing harder, you got all there there is up front.

i have learnt in the 300 tdi, to leave a
    bigger gap.

i don't think you will inprove things by rushing out and getting ventilated discs.
and it isn't that easy, you will need different calipers also.

with respect, Shepherd, i note you have two posts, and suspect you are new to owning a disco,
so can i ask what you drove before the disco?

these things weigh a fair bit and do take some time to get used to.

we all will try to help you.

Shepherd................ I've had the disco for 7yrs, not much trouble till now, just cruise control hoses and C/V joint leaks. I've driven Landcruisers from the early '70s till 7 yrs ago.

ok, sorry, i just noticed you said you did 30,000 on the pads,

    so how are the calipers?
if you try to push the pads back out, is it really difficult?
maybe the calipers need an overhaul.
also ckeck that you are getting full power brakes happening,
do you feel the difference in the brakes between engine off and engine on?
maybe the power brake reservoir is leaking - lack of vacuum
