I often use a forwards gear (in my RWD auto car) to reverse heavy loads down my driveway. A slight touch of throttle gives the rear end a bit of bite, and the front wheels don't skid and cause loss of steering. Perfectly sound so long as you do it with due care, don't overdo it.

I have a Auto D1 V8, and have cruised this area for quite a few years, :D and have never had any issues at all,, just take it quietly, and as sugested, you can stop periodically if desired to let them cool too. Might be worth while invesigating what sort of brake pads you currently have on your car.
The only time I've ever had brake fade was going over Mt Hotham towing a trailer,, (at speed :wasntme:). And a few times we've watched them glowing too,, ;)

In the realm of crazy ideas...fit a mechanical engine stop cable so you can switch the engine off with the ignition still on (to prevent steering from locking, ancilliaries etc).

Fit a Jake brake?
Dunno if you can actually do either with a petrol engine though...

Then you would have next to no brakes and super heavy steering. You will need the tree to stop you now.;)

I found that one of the biggest contibuting factors that annoyed me with the 4.6 in my RRC auto was the stepper motor constantly keeping the revs up, mine would idle at around 750 to 800 rpm and in low 1st with 33's it would be pretty much impossible to slow it down enough to be comfortable. In one instance when reversing down a slope it was unstoppable and we had to put into neutral for the brakes to stop it, it had that much torque it would just drive through the brakes. A dangerous situation.
We did try the A/C idea, but again the good little stepper motor would just keep those revs up there....:(

Seriously, (i'm learning here, my experience with petrol engines is minimal and simple) (also sorry if this is a hijack) everything is still spinning, so is there a reason there won't be vacuum and the power steering pump would still be pumping i'd have thought. It's only when you stop/stall completely that these two problems would surface, and by then you've stopped :D

Found that in a mates GU with an LS1, his brakes were constantly cooking, crappy low range does not help, so I told him to shift into second, worked well for the slow stuff

This air con trick sounds interesting, still love to hear from someone with reduction gears..............

life with an auto takes some getting use to, i tell you what though great in the sand(robe).

so when a d2 uses hill decent it does this with braking?:eek: i was under the impression it was done with the engine somehow..... well thats no different...... what hapopens in a slide......that the whole point of engine braking... sets you right if you dont panic and hit the skids......mmmm need to drive my mate d2 down a steep clay topped hill.
