An ideal opportunity for a new waterpump? If it hasn't been done for awhile here's your chance. They don't cost much, even less to install.

OK, So Ive gor the radiator out of my 97 V8 Disco ready to go to Riverstone Radiators tomorrow to be rodded and cleaned.
I've also got a new fan clutch and new coolent ready to go when it comes back. A new thermostat and pressure cap were done last week.
So my quesiton is, whilsy Ive got the radiator out and easy access, what else to you kind folk suggest I do?
I qould hate to put it all back together only to find I need to check/replace something else at the same time.

Hi Shamat
I would be changing all the hoses that carry coolant, including the pair to the heater core.
Then work out which way the coolant runs through the heater core and back flush it, but don't over do the pressure while you are doing this.
I am not sure, what to suggest about the welsh plugs, whether to disturb them or not, so if the old coolant when it was dumped, was very discoloured, they may be corroded and would need replacing as well.
If corrosion has been a problem, the water pump impellor would also be suspect, by replacing the pump, you get a fresh start with a new seal and bearing, anyway.
you could always clean as much as you can, then you may find something else to check or replace
One thing not mentioned yet is a new serpentine belt.
New rubber mounts.

Hi Shamat,
In regard to the welch plugs, or core plugs if you do embark on this little exercise the only ones you can get at would easily (ish) would be the ones under the exhaust manifold, and sods law would say the one at the back of the block would be the one to go. I've done two of them one the exhaust side with the engine in and the radiator in, when I got to the second one I wished I had never opened the bonnet. Get a spare or two and only buy Land Rover ones, they fit others don't and leak, trust me.
One thing I've also done whilst doing this sort of thing is wrap that plastic cable protector around the two heater hoses, more so on the areas around where you have possible contact, I've had two hole out where they rubbed on the head of a nut.
Make sure you bleed the system properly when you put the coolant back in, you don't want any hotspots in the head.
