    Road Handling

How does the Discovery 1 handle on the road compared to a new 4x4 or discovery 2/2a?

    Thanks

its all down to how its set up in suspension but the D1 will not perform as well as a new 4wd or a disco 2a which has SLS to prevent body roll...

However it really also depends what you mean buy handling on road and what your expectations are..

I actually think my discovery handles better on road than my hilux but that is just personal choice and my own driving style, possible very differnt to you and what your used too

Mine used to roll pretty badly on the stock suspension especially when I had the roof rack and rooftop tent on top. Bilstein shocks and Dobinson spring upgrades made a huge difference to the handling.

I'm just about to swap out my long travel pro comp and soft dobinsons for some stiffer dobinsons, bilsteins and airbags.
It was great for articulation but crap at highway speeds on sweeping bends or corners in general. It all depends on what you use it for. That setup used to suit my use, now Im doing more touring with heavier loads it doesn't.
Hopefully the new setup will work well.

We have just swapped from a KJ cherokee to a disco 1, the difference was pretty noticeable when I first drove it with more body roll in the bends.

I am used to it now and it doesn't really bother me, I didn't buy a 4WD for it's on-road characteristics anyway, you just take it a bit slower if needs be

depends on how you set it up.

you can set it up to handle on road like a go kart.

But then it will only go off road about as well as a toyota.

you can set it up so it offroads like a landy should.

But then it will only go onroad as well as a toyota.

the best bang for buck in getting good onroad handling and off road flex is to put in a stiffer sway bar at the rear (or do both ends) then fit in sway bar disconnects to the stiffened bars.
