If your D1 has done over say 100-120KK then its probably time for new shocks.
The big advantage of premium shocks like Bilstein is that they handle corrugations better than standard shocks and will last a long time if not abused. They also usually make the car feel "tighter" around curves but this is not really the prime function of shockers.

However IMHO any shock other than the LR branded originals will give a harsher ride so it is up to you what your priorities are.

I use Bilsteins and am very happy with them, but mine are valved for comfort and these are now not generally available.

The OME (Old man Emu) shocks are good (in my opinion). Not cheap but not as pricey as Bilsteins. Done a lot of K's on mine, mainly loaded up for work, been over the currogated Tanami (even with 80K on them) and are still good. Had OME's on a previous Range Rover and were OK on that too.

I second the suggestion of Bilsteins. My 110 has billies that were on it when I bought the car. They have done >130k km with me over 11 years and are still working more than acceptably. Other monotube shocks such as koni and de-carbon also have good reputations.

My experience is different. OMEs are a twin tube shock made by Monroe. Fairly run of the mill. I bought a pair of new, unused RRC/Disco rear OMEs from a friend (he had bought them then changed his mind). One started weeping oil almost straight away. Overall they have held up OK, but they are not in the same class as monotube shocks by any stretch of the imagination.

I've just installed Bilsteins from the U.S in my 98 D1, after having cheaper suspension stuff shocks. Big difference. The cheap ones were very harsh, the Bilsteins are a much better ride. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

I got mine from Shox.com. Cost was about $450 delivered. Delivery took 2 days via DHL. Hope this helps.

I have had great experiences with Koni's on a couple of different 4WD's.They are fully adjustable for different ride quality and they last longer than any other shock in my experience.I have not had a good experience with OME gas shocks for longevity.

I put Bilstiens on my Defender and have done the Madigan Line, The Cape, countless other rough track trips and many road kilometres as well as towing my boat around for years on them. They made the ride much more comfortable and the old girl feels tighter on the road compared to the old standard shocks that were on it.
