The D1 CDL is a definite use it or lose it thing
There was a link in TGO a while back about fixing this,,
I have a 97 TDI have not used CDL for 12 months tried the w/end and leaver would not shift to the left to engage.Will get H and L range any ideas will be appreciated.

get under the vehicle give the linkages a spray with a penetrating lubricant and then keep working the lever, it will free up.

Thanks for the advise sprayed last night with penetrine will keep doing this and hopefully frees up.
The CDL lever where it enters the box has no seal to keep mud etc out, so it might have dried caked dirt in it's housing. Mine did not move easily and when I stripped the cosul and actually got to the top of the gearbox it was clear what the prob was. MUD!. I ended up removing the sliding rods and gave it all a clean and grease and it was an easy throw after that.

Thanks 4 the link I will proberly have to take out console to look at it.After 3 nights of spraying penatrine and trying to move it no joy.The tutorial really explains it well.
Just a short update,thanks for all the advise .Finaly got around to pulling out console and removeing rubber cover.The shaft was rusted in and ball joint also showed signs of rust,sprayed with penertrine and after 10 mins all free and working well.Packed with grease and in process of refitment guess I need to use little leaver more.
