    Hi Andrew,
I love your optimism, if you take the rocker shaft off you can see if all the valve stems are level, if not suggests a bent valve. No doubt now you'll be taking the head off, checking the piston height will be the next big test to make sure you haven't bent any con rods, plus you'll be able to check the piston crowns and the valves.
Sorry to hear about your problem, this sort of thing is never good, Bit of a bugger eh!!
If you have a bit of time up your sleeve if you look up Turner Engineering in the UK you'll be able to get your parts shipped over at quite a reasonable cost. They can usually have the parts on your doorstep inside seven days after the order is placed, they are very efficient and easy to deal with.

    Hi River,
I see you put your D1 on Ebay.......... you decided to part company, no doubt you'll be back, just a minor bump in the road. Good luck.

    Dicovery TDI 300 engine probem

Further to my last post on 1st January 2012, I have the vehicle back in Brisbane. The problem turned out to be the big end bearing on nunber 4 cylinder. The noise was the piston hitting the head.

Ive been told an exchange short engine is what is required and that I wont have any change frorm $9,000.00.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds correct or should I try another mechanic?

If it is correct then considering I paid $9k for the vehicle last October I need to decide what to do. Anyone interrested in buying it for parts?

depends on how badly gone the bottom end is and if the block is damaged.

if its dead can I have it so I can turn it into a runaway for a demos sake?

    Hi Rodlar
Surely a second-hand engine from a reputable spares place would be a cheaper option. I've just rebuilt an engine myself and installed it for considerably less than $9k, depends on how much time you have got, how handy you are with spanners and do you really want to do this? If the vehicle is in overall good condition, might be worth considering, you could sell a lot of the old engine parts when you swap the engines to recover some of the cost, that is assuming that you didn't have to use all the parts from the old engine for the new engine.
$18k invested in a D1 does seem a bit over the top.
