    Heavy Duty Axles

I have just recently broken a rear axle on my Disco. I am currently looking at my replacement options; replace with heavy duty axles, or replacing with standard ones and carrying a spare and probably never have an issue every again.

I have an ARB locker on the rear, so at this point in time, the axles are the weakest point in my drive line (the fuse). I have a camper trailer and use the Disco for touring, I am not into anything too hard core.

My question is; if I replace my rear axles with HD axles, what then becomes the fuse and breakes?

Axles are easy to rip out and replace.

    Hi Mike,

I would say you wouldn't be in danger of breaking ANYTHING else with heavy duty axles installed and air locker , if you aren't doing any hardcore offroad. Also, using Disco 24 spline standard axles (easily obtainable and cheap too ) with moderate off road use and a locker is still a good option IMO, I would pull them everynow and then and check for spline twists etc that can show the beginnings of a breakage.

I've got the exact same set-up in the back of my Defender and I've had no issue since that day. In some respects I've found that I don't put the axles under the same pressure due to the locker - being that I tend to approach obstacles slower and there's no 'shock' loading.

If there was going to be a fuse so to speak, then you'd have to presume that the next weakest link is the transfer case (presuming that you've fitted the HD drive flanges) however that's going to take a lot of force to cause damage there - a lot of force!!!

    Cheers

the 24 splines are pretty tough if your not going burko or doing comps.

Driven sensibly the 24's should be fine. but if you intend to play then upgrade to ashcrofts or the like

I was lucky, mine twisted at the wheel end. Nice and easy to get out.
