This might be something you already know but always keep the leads apart and not touching the engine block...I don't know if this would matter on the Rover V8 but I had an older ford 289 once and when it was cold and wet sometimes it would miss heaps and I think it had something to do with it. The motor has lead clips on it anyway which you can use for this. Just make sure you have the right set for the engine and make it all very nice and tidy and you'll be right.

There is a picture in the Rover workshop manual, which shows exactly where to route the HT leads; apparently if they are in the wrong place and the insulation is breaking down, the current can jump to the wrong lead and cause premature firing on the wrong cylinder, which breaks the crank :eek:

Yes over $100 but they seem to last 3 times as long. The other thing I like about them is that they are the correct diameter; black; and the properly shaped ends are supplied; and they connect to the plugs with a nice decisive action, unlike all of the other leads I have tried.Quote:

I had a set of magnacore on my 80's magna on gas.
they went from car to car and then got chopped up for later lancer/hyundia car.
they are full competition leads and the largest dia [9mm?] but they served me very well.for the 5 leads they was a lot more than $100 many rears ago and came with 10yr warranty for compition use.
mice ate them when i shoved themn in a bag in the cupboard.
I had ngk stainless for P76-a buisness used to order in nissan 6cyl sets for 4 cyl and the 2 leftovers fitted .last set i gave away to new owner had problems on gas and when fitted with resistance leads the big holley coil worked the way it was intended.
The Bosch ones fit really well on my V8 when I had it, just bought the set made for my 3.9 Rover V8 and they had all the right lengths and different angled ends depending on where they were going so they fit really well on the ends and around the engine all like they should. Was really happy with the Bosch lead set.
From memory the Bosch set was around $80 or there abouts.
Haven't tried Magnacore but I hear they're great.
As far as parts and bits for Rover engines from experience whatever Bee Utey tells you will be spot on...he's helped me out a few times with nothing but great results :)
My Magnacores are still going strong at 12 years. Only a little hardening at the plugs.
Damn plug ends sometimes are so hard to get off the plug that I have ripped the end out of the Magnacore on occasion. But that is a good thing.

"Funny" enough, I've just posted a similar issue with my V8 on the forum.
I would definitely do a compressions test, it will tell you if you have a problem with a ring or valve. In the case there is one or two cylinder with a pre ignition pressure problem, you might need to go further and do a leakage test to identify the source of the problem.
Let us know if you find it. I'm off to change the leads on mine which is the only thing I haven't done so far...
