I have done lots of kms on a set of ATRs fitted to my RRC. They work very well in sand, are great on bitumen and even work pretty well in mud. I can't see any reason to go for a more road biased tyre at all.
I have a 96 V8 petrol Disco that lives in Tea Gardens (Myall Lakes National Park, some soft sand where its been mined)its primary off road use is beach driving with occasional highway and gravel driving.
Am about to buy a set of Pirelli Scorpions but not sure which ones would be best on the sand.
The STR has a less aggressive tread pattern from my understanding.
Has any one experience with either tyre on sand.
Yea i know taking tyres is like asking about your sexuality but here goes.![]()

Thanks for the reply, was thinking much the same myself, you never know where you will end up in a Disco.
Indecently quoted $219 a tyre so not to expensive for what seems a great tyre.
Seems like a pretty good price. What size? Mine are 245/70 16. I estimate I have done about 100 000km on them with tread still left.
Are the Scorpions a 'hard' walled tyre or do they have some "give"? I have Cooper H/Ts at present and they cause a heck of a lot of jarring with the airbag suspension...they are getting towards end of life so am weighing up the options.
All advice welcome thanks

235 x 70 x 16,at that price.
2 things i think the 245 would fit my rims, standard Disco 7 inch alloy wheels, is the extra width any advantage.
No 2 my 96 Disco has 10100kls so i am not really looking at KLS but that sort of mileage is impressive, take me up to 2028 at that rate, probably have an electric wheelchair then.

The 245s will fit, I have mine on standard Rangie alloys. The slightly larger diameter would probably make your speedo more accurate too.
I have had as wide as 255s in the past, which I think were a bit too wide, the 245s suit the rim nicely. My Rangie would have come with 205s originally, which I think look a bit silly.
I put ATR 235's on my green one and was shocked at how skinny they looked,,
but then some kind soul helped me with that problem by writing the car off,,
7 days I got out of those tyres--
I think around $200 F&B??

You have convinced me 245 it will be, repriced at $225.00 so not much more.
I also didn't know that extra width also added to the diameter, thanks for your advice. Let you know how they go in the sand in a couple off weeks.
