I have been singing the praises of my Disco for too long now so something dumb had to go wrong and sure enough, today did not disappoint.
I should preface this by saying this sunroof has never leaked before, also this car's previous owner said that it had never leaked either.
The other day it had rained overnight and I got in the car on the sunny next morning and didn't wait long enough before opening the sun roof and a bit of water was still on the roof so it must have got in somewhere when I opened it and you could see it pooling through the roof lining around the sunroof (the stuff with no actual roof behind it) and then dropped on to my wife's head! Looked like there may have been some sitting somewhere else up there too because when I went around corners or on different angles more water would drip again.
Anyway that was that and I just thought some water came through when I opened it up and it had water sitting on top of it. Well today we had a downpour and I also had band practice. So I loaded all my crap in the car and then hopped in to drive away and saw that the passenger floor and some of the seat was soaked and a look up showed the roof lining all saturated in parts and it was dripping all over the place. A LOT of water was up there. As I drove away too it was still raining and the bugger kept leaking on me so I just put a towel under it and kept mopping it up but now the roof lining is all wet and I still think there is a bunch of water sitting somewhere in that roof and I'm hoping it dries out and doesn't rust or rot anything up there. Short of cutting the lining I can't see where it is and try to clean it up.
I've got it sitting in the garage right now with the sunroof open and the windows half open to try and let some air in but it looked like a lot of water had come through.
Strangely it was only happening on the passenger side and it started happening quite suddenly.
I've heard a few things about sunroofs how things can get blocked etc. etc. but this one is an aftermarket one I think so it might not be Land Rover issue...maybe Big Guy can chime in as he owned the car before me and probably knows what kind of sunroof it is.
This is completely unacceptable and I had some very stern words to my car before leaving it in the garage. Such a sturdy vehicle and it's dripping rain through the sunroof...dumb problem!! Plus the roof lining and overall interior is in tip top shape so I don't want some dumb leaking sunroof ruining any of it.
Like I said it's copped a lot of heavy rain before and not let anything through. Now it seems to be letting heaps through.
Please any advice would be great as I want to fix this before it makes my Disco smell really bad. Hopefully the spiders in the garage aren't already having a party in my car.
Major part of the heart and soul of AULRO.comI, too, think a sunroof is a stupid idea - especially in Oz. Unfortunately, my model RR came with one as standard equipment.
They break, they leak, they rust, they let in too much heat.
The one on my wife's Forester is easily twice as big as the Rangie's - again it's a non-delete option.

it is a landy - I think it was a design inclusion that all of them must leak water from somewhere into somewhere the owner would prefer it wasn't, through something that shouldn't leak

As a lad I installed an aftermarket sunroof. It ended up with a large amount of silicone sealant around it, to seal it permanently SHUT!!! This worked until the car rusted out and got replaced.

Haha dammit is there no good outcome for this sunroof? Is it destined to leak even if I fix whatever is causing this leak? It has been through some fierce storms before and sat outside in the weather for long times and never leaked before...it seemed to come about this time after it was actually garaged for a long time while we were away. Perhaps a spider got into one of these drain plugs or something???
God what a painful problem to have, I am wishing very much that I didn't have one of these dumb sunroofs at all and I'm seriously contemplating just ripping it out and plugging up the hole, but I guess that would look pretty nasty.
Is there no good solution here?

Here are some pics of the sunroof I have installed...I have a feeling it's slightly different from those that came factory as it's an aftermarket one. I thought that this might mean that it was more resilient to the normal leaks but apparently I was wrong
I guess now that it's leaked on to the passenger floor too should I pull up the carpet and let it all dry nicely? What happens to the roof lining if I don't pull it off and let it dry now that it's got water sitting in it? I've got it in the garage with the sunroof open to air it out but I doubt this will dry out the moisture in the roof itself, at least not unless I left it sitting in a very hot place for a long time.

There are more discussions on leaking sunroofs than you have time to read!
The previous owner on my ES sealed them using a sealant. Works pretty well and I dare not wash the area to hard!
That's just about your only option unless you want to open them up!

Well I'm going to need to open it up to dry it out because I won't be able to sleep at night knowing there is moisture sitting in a sealed area not getting any air to it
I have time to be able to do it properly so I don't mind if it takes a bit of time, this is a good car so it's worth doing right...I just don't want to!

A common cause of leakage is blocked drains, but I can't be at all specific.

P.S. I agree 100% with Ron about sunroofs - in this climate they are ludicrous.

Angus ..... PLUS .... Try cleaning the rubbers / slides and lubing the slide rail ..... Pure Silicon spray in a can, helps everything slide and operate nicely
and when I say clean it ... I mean detail clean it
