I kind of gave up on this for a bit. After 4.5 years another 6 months wasn't going to hurt. Have taken another look today and the timing is way out. Am thinking the drill bit that sat in the injector pump with the timing belt off for the past few years was moved at some stage. Pics with proper timing pin in place. Attachment 52156

I have had a flick through the workshop manual. Can I just remove the belt, rotate the crankhaft and put the flywheel pin in as well the rotate the camshaft pulley to align with its timing mark?
Motor hasn't started with the timing like this but has been cranked a bit. Could it have bent something?
Any help appreciated
Nick

Blknight, thanks, your guide was very helpful. I now have a running 300tdi.:)
Have taken it on about a 10km drive. Initially was blowing a bit of smoke but seems fine now. Will now tidy it up and try and get a warrant of fitness on it.
