How do I get doors closing nicely again ?
Hey guys.
99/300tdi , 3 doors were opening and closing just beautifully , zero effort , noise. But now both front doors have started jamming a bit , On drivers side the piller door thingo come a bit loose , the passenger sides just gotten tougher to open or close.
I've adjusted both 1/2 a dozen times but can't get them right - Is there a trick in getting the damn door catches set right ?
Cheers

Have never needed to touch my front doors, only the rear door & that on the post & maybe the bronze wedge.
Have you inspected the hinge pins, they could be worn & allowing the door to drop?

Thanks 4b , they look ok . It's just getting the striker [found out they're called ] set right again on drivers , it's really tricky..
Reading around I've found out you also might need to adjust the handle rod in the door , bugger . Looks like the thats the problem with the passenger door, the handle sits in too far so can't open properly I think.
That means taking of the bloody door trim to get at it and it looks like that might be next , daughter uses that side and can never get it open .
Cheers

Buy some more door trim clips before you start. I ruin about half every time I take off a door card

I HAVE SAID IT BEFORE BUT IT'S WORTH REPEATING.
Before fitting the door card back finally, give each plastic pin a small dab of grease or Vaseline as it makes it a darn sight easier to remove the card next time, & there will be a next time.
After repairing, do not refit the card but leave it off for a week or so to make doubly sure. You can refit the handle to make it easier.

Hi, I know this thread is an old one, but a tip on door adjustment.
****Three things****
1/. Make sure that the steped end section of the striker pin isn't fouling on the inside edge of the door latch/lock (look for shinny witness marks) The stiker pin has washer/s behind to (about 1 1/2 in round) which space it out, you may need to add or remove one to get it right.
2/. Once you have the striker 90% in the right spot, tighten it fully then give it a GOOD HARD tap with a hammer, either up, down, in or out to get the sweet spot.
(The pin will not bend, but the pilar will deform slightly, giving you the diagonal movement you may need to compensate for slight wear in the door hinges etc..
3/. Once you are happy with the door closing/opening effort, have a look at the body line of the car, if the door is sitting 'in' too much then open door, remove the rubber seal, and "massage" the metal seal edge outwards a little (all the way around) with a hamer, then re-fit seal and check. then massage some more if needed.
***There is always a risk when adjusting doors on a Discovery, that after you get the door spot on, that you may well have comprimised the weather sealing. get yourself a sheet of A4 paper, and place it between the door and the seal, then close the door. you should be able to slide the sheet of paper out with a resonable effort. if it is very easy, or it falls out Dust and/or water WILL come in. If it is too hard (paper will rip) then eventually the seal will rub the paint off your door, and also greater effort will be required to close the door.
Hope this helps....well, someone anyway
