    Erik,
The holding plate simply clamps the IP pulley to the outside timing cover such that it cannot rotate when you pull the IP out from the back. Do not undo the big nut! Badness will result.

To be honest though, the only reason I built that plate was the IP started leaking straight after an engine minor rebuild (as in first startup). I had a known good pump and knew the t-belt was brand new, properly timed and tensioned and had probably only gone round half a doen times! I thought it a fair bet to try the holding tool.

If I was to do an IP change out on an unknown history timing belt I would strip the front end. Dont take too long and good piece of mind.

Aha. THANKYOU. The posts I had read must have all been manuals. Now they all line up nicely.

    Big Thanks, Erik

Thanks Steve, I have now undone everything and can see how it all works. You were right to direct me to check the belt and I now have the replacements and will change everything, as soon as I have swapped the pump over from my blown head gasket motor.

    Erik
