    down grading recomendations?

i am selling my td5 defender due to financial reasons and i am now looking at a disco to recruit finances and still be able to work.
my total budget is up to $5000
it will be used for towing my tool trailer[im a carpenter by trade(explains grammar)] and need a good tower. from looking around it looks like a v8 petrol is the go(price wise). not extremly worried about fuel costs, more interested in reliabiliity as i am looking at going where the work is (where ever that is) and not wanting to stress when the next break down will be etc

so your engine recomendations and things to look out for are greatly appreciated.

    thanks Dan

I have a '95 V8 and love it. It pulls my work trailer no worries.
They are easy to work on and parts are cheap.
LPG saves heaps in running costs, but does add a few more things to go wrong (tune is very important)
Should easy get one for $5k
    And they sound great

If fuel economy is not a factor. GO THE V8!!! with Caution. Once on the move there is bugger all difference even here in the hills (MT dandenong). Either engine has it's good points and bad. I have a manual TDI and sometimes wish I'd got an AUTO. Driving auto's when mine was in the shop for servicing I'd bitch and whine for my manual, but now that I'm older I wish I'd got aAUTO.
Crap I'm getting Old!!!!! and Lazy!!!!! Doesn't help that the clutch needs replacing, or the slave/master cylinder does?????????

    Cheers

I know what you are saying there blitz. as i said, its got to go for financial reasons never wanted to sell it.sad times ); (i would send myself mad if i didn't sell due to stress etc)

and thanks for the info guys. Is there anything specific to look out for in inspection?
and i assume the 3.5&3.9 are pretty much the same just bigger bore, slightly newer. etc

IIRC the 3.5's were all carburetted but when the 3.9s came along they went to fuel injection.

    I could be wrong though.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

The disco and RRC came in 3.5 carb and EFI. The RRC classic 3.5 changed to EFI in 1986

Defenders are no better than Discos. I think they are worse in a lot of ways.

I recently bought my 3.9ltr disco1. Things I wished I payed attention to are, dimming lights on idle, idle speed fluctuating, idle recovery time (idle staying at 1200rpm for 3-5 seconds before returning to normal) and temp fluctuations in hill climbs. On test drive it was great, by the time I got it home I thought wtf did I buy. But after spending countless hours under hood it's almost right lol. Not trying to put you off, just lending advice. Obviously oil leaks is a biggie too
