    300tdi power steering hose replacement.

Hi guys, wanting to get this done today/tomorrow, I have a new power steering hose, the low pressure return from the steering box to the reservoir.

Do i need to drain the reservoir/system? Or will there be a sufficient enough air lock to get away with just pulling the old one of and sticking the new one on?

If i do need to drain how do i go about doing that, is it as simple as just removing the hose from the reservoir and steering box and just collecting whatever fluid drains out? I cant seem to find any reference to draining it in the rave or haynes manual???

    Cheers guys.

Have a drip tray or two ready loosen both ends then just be as quick as you can, you will loose a bit, keep the lid on the reservoir, you should be fine.
If your drip trays are clean you can put the old fluid back in, either way top it up and bleed the system....engine running, then lock to lock a few times, top it ip again

you can use ATF it's the same as power steering fluid.

Shouldn't one use the bleed screw when bleeding? That's how I've always done it, but could be pointless.

All done, lost a heap load of fluid though, undid the steering box end first and all the fluid from the reservoir completely drained out, fluid everywhere! No chance of retaining the fluid cos it dripped over chassis etc and dragged in dirt with it.

What a nightmare trying to get the new one back on at the box though, do you think I could get the nut to screw into the damn thread - was there for a good hour, bloody fiddly thing!! the mrs sorted it in the end though, comes in handy for some things!

Thats only required if you are either changing the pump or the steering box but it wont hurt.
