    OE or aftermarket fuel pump

    Hi All,

I am in need of a replacement fuel pump/sender unit for my '97 V8 Disco.
There seems to be O.E. and aftermarket ones available with the aftermarket ones being considerably cheaper.

Has anyone had experience with these cheaper aftermarket ones?

I have replaced a good number of fuel pumps with the Bosch universal pump BFP772, no problems, but you re-use the old housing. Don't know about the complete aftermarket units.

If you only need the pump then buy a Bosch replacement and swap it into your carrier.
If you search on here you will get the part number and some how to's.

Thanks, but I also need a new Sender unit, so I think the whole assembly is the way to go (would be nice to know just how much fuel I have in the tank - I've done without it for a while now, but since i need a new pump I may as well fix the sender also).

Will the cheaper After market one do the job or should I stick to OE?

Never bought a new entire assembly so can't help you there.

What is wrong with the sender?

You can replace the flexible wire strap if it is broken. I replaced mine with a headphone cable inner 4 years ago. Still going strong. If the float isn't floating you should be able to replace it too.

I'm pretty sure is the resistor in the sender. I have tried bending the needle to make a better contact (which seems to work while the unit is out of the tank), but this doesn't work when its all back together. I also tried cleaning it - I think this has made it worse.

Short of it all is a new sender and pump (now that the old one has packed it in).
Simplest option I can see if just to replace the entire unit.

For the low cost I might give the aftermarket a go - at least I get a new sender. If the pump fails again I can then just replace with the Bosch unit.

pull it and check the continuity of it on a weekend when you have a few hours to kill with a multimeter, the most common failures can be sorted by someone who knows how to solder.

The pump is the same (near enough too) as the VN commodore pump and the common failures on the sender are

    1. the multiplug or vehicle side of the harness
    2. the wire to the sender itself inside the tank
    3. the wiper on the sender resistor, clean it and push it back in place.

Check the harness side by earthing the sender wire to see if it moves the needle and for the fuel pump issue dont forget to check the fuel pump relay.

The OEM should be VDO Siemans, There is some Chinese rubbish offered around the traps. BEWARE
You could go the Holden Commodore fuel pump, I can't recall what era, but a pretty straight forward swap.

VN-VP Commodore V6 in tank pump. NOT the V8 one - that is just a supply pump to an external pressure pump - they look similar, but the V8 one is shorter than the V6 version as the V6 version has the pressure pump internals in it.

Not sure if the VR-VS pumps were the same - they could be...
