300 Tdi Auto to Manual Feasability?

That and the field repairability of a manual.

Comp driving is a completely different kettle to long range touring.

you need a sum total of 7 parts inside a manual to get drive out of it

(input shaft, input bearing, center support bearing, 4th gear selection collar, rear output shaft, rear output bearing(s) and the clutch)

IF you really really want to have a hands down which trans is better for offroad work then both you and MR LR JNR are both wrong. Nothing beats the tractability (and mechanical simplicity) of a full hydrostatic or electric driveline.

Yeah as can be seen each type of trans has its benefits, personally i like the mechanical simplicity of a manual and thats why i choose that. Also my driving style and interest come in to play. Sure if i had a comp truck i'd probably run a 350 and an auto haha, but i doubt this car will ever be that!!

I just dislike the auto so i want it out. Problem is with a stuffed auto a D1 is worth practically nothing, otherwise i'd just sell it and keep driving the Td5 while its available to me (which i'll do anyway), if i go to the effort i figure i might aswell keep it and do what i originally wanted with it which was a Ute chop.

Dave, I reckon my Cox Stockman has the best drive system ever invented, a friction cone and 2 discs, simple, easy to adjust, accessible and drives a solid axle, Yeh, LOL Regards Frank.

Owned both auto and manual discos, also owned manual and auto Toyotas(auto 2.5td surf and manual 4.5td landcruiser tipper) amongst other makes. All have been used for work, eg off road, towing, pulling trees over, lugging loads around farms/estates etc

Manual disco was a beast and worked hard for a living but the auto is just better for day to day work, the gear selection is always right as you're always in the right gear, turbo lag isn't an issue, hill starts aren't an issue, hill starts when towing aren't an issue, changing gear uphill isn't an issue, accelerating onto the freeway isn't an issue, leaving people at lights isn't an issue, left foot braking isn't an issue, town driving isn't an issue, motorway driving fully loaded isn't an issue, hill descents aren't an issue and off roading is much better in the auto. In fact, other than the torque converter needing 2500+ rpm to engage fully there is not one thing I can pick on the auto for, in my world it beats the manual every time AND I HATE AUTOS!

And all at sub 80km/h or in low range...

Love the auto/manual arguments! My D2 TD5 Auto with a chip is great off road, and for towing it is amazing. My D1 300TDi is a manual, Ashcroft suffix L, with MaxiDrive low range T/C gearing. Great off road, but hopeless as a tow car. Love them both, but it's horses for courses IMO. If I could have only one, it would be the D2, but it would get the T/C mods. The auto just walks over things. With the T/C mods it would be fine on steep descents. Better than HDC at any rate.

Dave, it doesn't need to be a stick. Mine failed because one of the quick conect cooler lines decided to quick disconnect. Those things are going to be the first up against the wall when it comes home.

On the auto front, here is a pic of my mate's 79(?) series. He's modded this thing so it develops HP and torque figures that are in fantasyland. He tows a massive boat. Now, there is no way the standard manual and clutch can handle the outputs, boat or no boat. So, it has been converted to an auto. Not a Toyota auto, but one from a Chev, Silverado or Suburban. 6 speed. Don't know if anyone saw the ad where a VW Touareg towed a 747. Well, I reckon this tojo could launch one.

Food for thought. I have always preferred manuals. Now I'm not so sure. I know I never want to drive a manual truck ever again, but that isn't a fair comparison, as I never want to drive a truck of any kind again, but you get my drift.
