Yep, the costs of running a 3.9 V8 can get a bit scary eh?
OK, ...after 14 odd yr's owning and loving mine, this is how I've managed to get past worring about running costs -
Firstly get a gas-kit (proven to be a great cost-saver ...until you venture seriously "inland" ...where very quickly the cost-benefit evaporates)
Relegate your Steed to "the missus car" (be warned though, she'll NEVER refill the Gas, inevitably running out and then proceeding to run it on petrol ...until thats all gone too!)
NEVER let the kids borrow it (it ALWAYS comes back EMPTY!)
Get your lady a job fairly close to home ...and whenever the petrol needle indicates she's succumbed to the dreaded petrol-running, gently imply she's putting on a bit of weight ...and lovingly suggest she should walk to work for a few weeks.
You save petrol - she loses a bit of weight ...Win-Win
Haha good thread! I used to have a V8 D1 on gas and it was really nice to drive but I worried about fuel. On LPG it was pretty good to run and even though it went through the gas quicker than other fuels it is cheap so all in all it probably cost a similar amount to run as my Tdi now which has a Bee Utey special LPG fumigation kit and pretty much gets 900km per tank of Diesel and 1.5 very small tanks of LPG, only with the V8 I would have to have filled up the LPG about four times to get that many kilometres.
Get a cheap forward facing snorkel (eg Safari), off ebay. Helps the engine breathe better, so less effort. Sure the ECM will realize there's more air coming in and add more fuel to boot, but it is outweighed by the less effort required to suck air at speed.
And a set of exhaust headers.
Together these saved me about 10% on the fuel costs in my v8 Defender.
And when I need it, I can put the foot down and these add about 10% more power.
Other than that... You could start mucking round with the trucks aero. For example, you'll notice most road cars now have a small air dam in front of each forward wheel (under the front guard) as a rolling tire generates a lot of drag. Experiment with this.
get one of these to pull you around... Fuel = 0... Problem solved
One thing which will play havoc with fuel economy,if thats the correct term, is the thermostat.I replaced it 2 months ago after finding that it was stuck fully open and it has made a huge difference to economy and idle.As I only drive 15km each way to work the engine was not warming up and still running rich when I arrived.
With the new 88deg thermostat it warms up very quickly with the added bonus of a heater that warms up the car. Its an easy one to overlook with the one temperature suits all gauge that never seems to change.Looking back I suspect that mine failed over a period of time rather than overnight.
