Check for power at the fuel pump connector.

I have come across a faulty fuel pump relay in a TD5 Defender. D2s and Defenders use similar relays. Pull the relay out of its socket and replace it, shortly after you turn on the ignition (the fuel pump relay times out after about 1/2 minute) to see if it is activating. Swap it with a similar relay next.

+1 for BigJon's suggestion, use a test light plugged into the 2 fatter power wires. Crank engine for 1 second or so.

If there's power at the plug then kick the fuel tank, a faulty pump will sometimes restart with a shock.

If there's no power at the plug look at the connector over the muffler, check for darkened plastic around the pins (applies to pump plug too) then check the fuel pump relay is 1. clicking, 2. has power in at pin 30, 3. has power out at pin 87 during cranking.
