    TDI or TD5

    Hey guys, new to LR's.
Looking into getting a disco, want a either a TDI or TD5 in a manual.
Which one is better overall ? It will be used for mild off road use, camping and daily duties. I would want to mod it, which one reacts better to mods
? Anyhelp on this would be awesome, i realise there in different models aswell. Also do the D1 have a CDL ? Or how does the locking of the diffs work for d1 and d2's? Im slightly confused if someone could fill me in that would be sick.
    Cheers Dean

Sick hey? Oh well here goes!

D1 will def have a CDL. Some model D2's don't. Do a search (here on AULRO) to find out the year models.

You can mod a TD5 a lot more than a 300TDi. You can get a remap on a TD5 for not a lot of money with huge power gains.

The D1 has a lot less boot space than a D2.

D1 & D2 interior very similar. 300tdi no electronics (easy to fix in bush) Td5 not so easy. Same gearbox same transfer case except as some have said no cdl on some D2 models.Cheaper brakes to replace on D1.

I love my tdi but if i were buying today i'd get a TD5 D2, they were still too pricey when i got mine 6 years ago but good ones go for around $15k now.

The CDL as the name implies is simply a differential attached to the gear box that transfers engine power to the front and rear axles. in it's normal mode (Unlocked) power is transferred back and forth between axles as traction is needed. For instance power in a straight line would go to both axles, if you turn a corner power would only go to the rear axle, or if you were backing up a ramp and the back wheels lost traction, power would then go the the front axle. In this unlocked mode you have High and Low range.
If you move the short Diff lock lever to the left and either forward (High) or back (Low), when the lever is in the diff lock position an orange light symbol should be lit up on the dash. In this mode the Centre Diff Lock is locked solid and will transfer equal power to both sets of axles which is for off-road use ONLY, you must shift the transfer lever back over to the right when you return to tarred roads or you could (and will) damage the trans.
Now this does not mean that the front and rear axles are locked, if you lose traction on one wheel in both axles you will not move, same as any other 4WD, hope this helps, Regards Frank.

That is true if you are talking about the D1. On the D2 traction control will kick in to transfer power to the two wheels with grip and you'll maintain forward motion.

    CDL - Centre Diff Lock
It doesn't lock anything on the front or rear diff itself, you would need aftermarket diff lockers installed for that, there are several - ARB, Ashcroft, TJM, detroit just to name a few

the CDL is part of the tranfer case from factory
explained in previous posts how it works.
    Ive had RRC's & D1's with CDL,
Now have a D2 with traction control & found it fantastic,

There is a great video up on youtube that shows a bunch of Land Rovers driving an axle twister. There is D90 about a minute from the end that perfectly illustrates what can happen with cdl locked and open diffs front and rear.

As the poster comments the ones that got stuck didn't have traction control. To be fair it is a lot to do with driver skills, but that is the weak spot.

Yeh, that's if the 3 Amigos don't stick it to you, Regards Frank.
