RPM gauge moving to its own beat

    Howdy,

Driving down the freeway a few weeks ago I noticed the RPM dial had started dancing around a bit. It had done this once before and then out of the blue it fixed itself. Unforunately this time it looks to be a permanent querk because it is still moving around after 6 weeks ..When idling the RPM gauge will show anywhere between 750 rpm and 1100rpm as it jumps up and down.. but it does roughly track the real RPM as you put your foot down.
The speedo is fine for now.
Would anyone have a guess at where the fault is? How does the RPM gauge work? Is there a connection at the engine somewhere I should look into first? I really don't want to pull the display console out if I can avoid it as that looks like it'll potentially unsettle alot of electrical stuff I don't understand at all.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

    TDi or V8?

I believe that the revs are measured from the back of the alternator, perhaps it's worth checking those connections there first.

    G'day Dave,
    Thanks
I'll have a look around the alternator. It's a tdi

Had a look at the back of the alternator and found the white wire closest to the engine block was slightly loose. That is obviously the one relating to the gauge as I soldered it back on and the problem is solved.
Thumbs up Dave..had I gone to a mechanic or auto electrician with that non issue who knows what damage would have been..well I know I rarely get away from any garage for under a few hundred bucks these days.

It's always good to get an easy (and cheap) win like that
