Do all that you have said, great solid car worth nothing and perfect for a young driver and a whole lot less complicated than a freelander 1 for the same sort of money, friends 2 boys both have disco 1s- cheap and easy to maintain[especially if you import the parts]

Sounds like a plan.
Check the coolant expansion tank as I hear they crack quite easily
Otherwise, it's cheap and economical, and it's a 300tdi so it's no speed machine

My (24yo) daughter owns the one I drive around. Wife has one as well. Great visibility, comfortable enough and given they both (daughter & wife) have had nasty accidents in smaller cars, feel very safe in them. Cheap enough to buy and maintain, so they tick most of the boxes.

I cannot vouch for the 300tdi economy as both our D1's are V8's

Hes getting a series II/III one of the 1960/70 versions.

(probably going to have to sway to SWMBO then and he'll wind up in a derated tdi300 disco

Ean, to answer your original question - YES. Statistically they are on of the safest vehicles (based on real world UK crash statistics).

We have a '97 tdi manual.

Make sure the timing belt is up to date. Do the head gasket if not done at ~250k km and fit low coolant and over temp alarms (the OE temp guage is useless).

Provided it is well maintained by a Land Rover mechanic as mine is.I would more than highly recommend , the D1 96 Update 300TDI which mine is.It is a comfortable,Cheap to run Vehicle and safe but ,again, it has to be maintained.

Please note! Land Rover mechanic and not the LR dealer in Darwin. They are useless and ripoff more so than others. Parts take forever to be ordered or pay a lot more for them to airfreight it even though it should be on the shelf. When I was living in Darwin I would get parts from Roverlord in Melb usually overnight or next day for 1/2 the price of the dealer.
