    Thats not right

So im scratching around under my Discovery one with a torch because I hear a knock everytime I go over a bump, its worse going down for example if I drive up a gutter no bang but if I drive down as the back whells go down its like it slams down best I can discribe it would be if the springs were highly compressed and they decompress very fast off the gutter and the wheel hits the road with a bang, weird I know but thats what it feels like, now I did some research and came up with the A frame ball joint as a possible cause, so away I go and tjis is what I find

Could a anybody enlighten me as to why the previous owner would have done such a bodgy Mod/fix.....

Could the bang be your rear swivel A point likage rubber being stuffed?? not sure if I got the name right LOL but others will know the name. Where your A frame from your rear axle joins onto chassis cross member roughly under rear seat.
Or front sway bar rubber(s) gone on the front bolts?

Easy, they are bush mechanics and rough as guts!!!
It will be the bushes / rubbers at the other end of those bars and once replaced chuck away the washers.
As stated in the other posts check and or replace the bushes / rubbers on the front bars also then they are all done and you know where you stand in relation to replacements and maintenance.
    Cheers

thanks for that, so what do you think would be the purpose of them then in there?

also just a side thing would those Bushes being RS cause the Whole axle to sit to far to one side, while my spring are straight up and down it appears from the rear that the axle sits to far left as wheel on that side sticks out past guard but the other side does not, i have checked the offet of the rims and they are the same, a little confusing

i'll get some bushes, a kit out of the UK is only about $60AUD

Not sure without looking at it but it sounds like the spring centrebolt heads might have sheared off or the spring hangers have come loose to let the whole axle house slide over.

As for the washers they have put them there because they could not get the bolts (seized in) out of the the other side and I am guessing that the threads were damaged (corrosion or belting them) and could not be put all the way back.
Pull them out when you do the bushes / rubbers and replace or grease them (depending on damage) with a good waterproof grease and you will be amazed at how quiet it will all be.

P.S. Also there are adjustable and original design ball joints available. If you get a bar underneath you can lever it to check or brakes on and ease the clutch out and you can hear / feel the clunk and movement. Don't confuse it with back lash though.

Thanks for that, it has has a new raised suspention kit put on it, before i got it, i have checked around and cant see and broken or loose bits but ill have a closer look now i know where...

ill get some new Bolts just to be safe and do the whole lot at the same time, have you done an Aframe Ball joint, if so in your experience how hard is it to get it out of the Fulcrum and put it back, bearing in mind i dont have a press, you can buy the whole Kit and Kaboodle online but it is so much more expensive than just the balljoint..is it beeter to go down that road

    A frame ball joint

I have just done this job, the ball joint is very tight in the housing, I had a 40 tonne press available with simplified things, but I guess a bit of heat from an oxy torch, a big vice, and an 'Air Cooled Variable Resistor' (big hammer!) may shift it. If not available, then an engineering shop would be able to press it in for you. Mine wasn't hard to get off the vehicle, but I would have been stuffed without that press.
