Backlash coming from front drive and transfer

So i went for a drive this morning on a local track near maitland nsw.
Started off without issue, however started to hear a backlash cluck noise coming from under the disco. Its a manual v8 95 s1.
This noise only happen when coming on or off power. Both in low and high range and with or without DL.
I got under the vehilce when i got home and found that i can turn the front shaft about a 1/4 of a turn each way and the clunck noise came from inside the transfer case.

Anyone have a diagnosis for me?

Sounds like a normal LT230 to me. Mine does the same, but it always has, so I've never let it worry me. It had over 300KKM on it when I did my engine conversion and I pulled the TC apart to freshen it up - no gears worn, just needed a couple of bearings and thrust washers. It's all back together now and does the same thing.

If it wasn't doing it before, then not sure. If you grab a driveshaft and turn it, there is a fair bit inside the TC to take up - the spider gears in the centre diff, then mainshaft gears, then the intermediate shaft gears, then the input shaft gears. All that adds up to a bit of play in these.

But, as you say, this is a new noise, then something may have worn more than it should. The spider gear shims are known to wear, and this would cause more lash in the box, but not something that would happen in one trip.

    Cheers - Gav.

    Cheers for that.
Had a look at the rear prop also but there is no play in it at all.
Re cheched the front prop and there is alot of play and backlash noise.

I have a spare TC and will check it for any backlash also and see the difference.

Have you had a close inspection of the front tailshaft uni-joints, Regards Frank.

Yeah i had a good check of all the uni's and they seem pretty good.
I checked the other TC i have at home and it has a lot less backlash

Hmmm. If it has come on quickly, then I would suspect a bearing is chewing out, causing excessive clearances between some gears. Which one/s they are is anyone's guess though.

If you have a spare TC, then it may pay to swap them over and open it up...?

Not sure, I'm more of a Rangie person. If they are the same, diff ratios could be different. I'm sure someone will be able to answer this with certainty.

I would first of all check that front diff and drive flanges!!!! The front pinion shouldn't be able to rotate that far in any direction with the wheels on the ground unless there is either a cross pin about to drop out or a drive member about to strip out

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Smile Maybe the front diff???

In complete agreement with JC, the diff should not allow that much freeplay, could be a CV joint, fractured axle, or pinion shaft, or as said the cross pin taking itself off the job.
Certainly not a problem with the CDL, check by engaging centre difflock when stationary then climb under and try your driveshaft rotation trick, if less shaft rotation, then problem b'long diff.
