The problem with lockers and land rovers is that when you put in lockers you normally have bigger than stock tyres or at least more aggressive tyres.

The problem this gives you is that the half shafts in Land Rover are pretty crap and will break easly with lockers and a small amount of grunt.

It is not a case of if but when you will break a shaft with lockers.

I also believe if you have lockers you do think you are invincible and therefore go for things that you would not normally do.

I had standard 24 spline axles and 33x12.5x15s with my ARB lockers and never broke one or had a problem, more likely to break axles when you lose traction and then gain it again, with lockers you don't have to work the engine and driveline as hard. I now have MD axles and flanges as that was what i intended to as money was available to upgrade, your not in the race without lockers, regards Frank.

i'd try and find a set of 235/85 mud terrains second hand, and with the leftover cash, buy a tigerz11 winch, $499 for a 12000lb winch with dyneema rope, can't go wrong

the tyres will give you extra clearance and traction, you will be amazed at how much things improve off road, and with your new found confidence of 'i can go anywhere with these tyres' you will have a winch to get you out of trouble:D

Well you have not been trying hard enough :-)

or your idea of off roading hard is different to mine

And don't get me started on racing and lockers that is the last thing you want for off road racing :-)

I'd go the winch as that is what i did, a locker will aid you but can also dig you deeper in trouble. I'd rather be able to self extricate myself than attempt to drive out locked and get further into ****e - aint letting no jap 4by pull me out.

In your scenario,
With your considerations,
I would buy a front and rear ATB from ashcroft and fit it myself. (If you could not fit it pay a mate becuase just replacing the centres is not that hard).

Then with the change I would then buy some equipment enabling me to use a highlift jack as a winch.

My reasons are;
With your lift and AT's the 'soft' lockers will be gentle on your driveline but still enable you to get further than already possible in most driving scenario's,
With the highlift jack winch option, you will then have the ability to winch yourself, but after winching with a highlift jack over any distance greater than 5m's fully loaded you will come to appreciate how hard it is and how time consuming and how much physical effort is required and as a result drive within your and your vehicles capabilities more often because you DONOT want to hand winch again.

Then with abit of change buy something nice for my wife... maybe some flowers or a nice secluded weekend away... requiring the new lockers to get there!

I know that feeling all too well.

Spent along time time trying to get a 90 out of ditch on a welsh hill side with a hi lift. Why I have winches now days :-)
