    300TDi service on Phillip Island

    Hi All
New 300 TDi Discovery owner here. It is a 1997 model [build date 01/98]. I have some mechanical experience but not much money being semi-retired. The quote of $600-$700 for a minor service [engine oil and filter change] that I had today made me decide that I need to hone my mechanic skills or find a cheaper serice centre.
I am on Philip Island in Victoria; any advice on reasonable mechanics in the area would be appreciated. Alternatively there may be self-serve facilities available that someone knows of. I have some of the skills and probably most of the tools but nowhere to work on the vehicle that is not six inches of mud.
Also have a slow leak in one rear tyre and no F$%^&*&^ key for the spare wheel lock!

engine oil is pretty straight forward to do in your drive

    10L Oil
    1 x oil filter
    1 x 2L milk bottle
19mm ring spanner? i think thats correct

tip, cut the top off the milk container so that it is just taller the the filter, put it over the filter while you undo it, it not only catches the filter but also the oil sitting in the pump.....saves oil going everywhere

don't forget to check the oil level again after you have run it up

    approx. $60

What is this "concrete" of which you speak? I have a driveway composed of sand, pine duff & possum poo - within 150 metres of Bass Strait!

Thank you for the offer. I will PM you when I have the appropriate filters and fluids organised. Are you averse to imported ales?

In preparation for this service I have read everything I can find on this site and others, but still have a couple of questions.
I don't know what oil has been used in the past in this vehicle, can I just pick one to go on with or are there incompatible types?
Same with coolant, what is in there seems to have no colour. How do I determine which to use in future?
    Any advice appreciated.

Any 15w40 diesel oil will be ok, coolant i think JC mentioned that use the same coolant that is spec'd for a commy V6 and you'll be right, if its clear now then i suspect its either really old or non existent.
