Hi, i'm looking to improve my sound in my D1.
I have replaced the front speakers with some 2 way Pioneer 4 inch speakers, and i have 6x9's in boxes in the back.
Around town its ok since the 6x9's do more work and provide volume, but then on a trip and loaded i usually remove them so rely on the front speakers.
Has anyone fitted bigger than 4 inch speakers in the front?
Is an amp worth it?
Any ideas???
i wrote a blog the other night about my stereo but didnt let me upload for some reason n then i lost everything i wrote
ill try put it up again soon but this is what did:
at the front i put pioneer 4 inch fairly shallow speakers as the holes are small. i made some mdf spacers (pic1) to get the back of the speakers out a bit.
in the back i had brackets made up (pic2) and drilled holes to match the factory 4 inch bracket. put some mdf spacers in and fitted 6 inch speakers then wrapped a bit of carpet to match the rest of the car.
i should let you know that my disco 1 doesnt have the 6 inch in the door with the amp. not sure if they were never there or if the previous owner removed them when he put draws in. the trim panle looks like something out of the factory though and not a patch job.
for the deck i used pioneer big blu i think. just has ipod and blutooth and radio. no cd or anything like that. the old one was dvd player gps etc. which i never used coz u would have to watch movies whilst driving and weighed a tonne which is why the olf facia was cracked to bits. i installed a new facia (another blog) and wanted to make sure the stereo was light and wouldnt crack it again. its enough to power the 4 speakers and to be honest the systems doesnt sound that bad. 6 in the back gives pretty good bass and the 4 and factory tweeters up front.
its simple setup with not too much work worth the little effort. could have spent much more and not got that much better sound and the sound shop had some daft ideas of how they wanted to fit speakers in i told them not to bother.
I got my 4" 2 way speakers from an alpine radio guy in Seaford 29 Wells Road.
Just cut the wire to the tweeters as I still use the original ones. Fitted new speakers in the rear in the same place as the originals up high.
They have an Alpine head unit for about $270 that will fit exactly the same place and size as the original LR unit so no new face plate or anything. They also can install it for you. They also can do any custom trimming you want as they do motor trimming for custom work also. Were very helpful when I dealt with them for my D1.
Thanks. I was hoping that someone had put 6" speakers in the front doors.
The system i have is ok except for the front. When on a trip the rear is loaded to the roof, so i only get sound from the front and the 4" speakers struggle over the noise of the V8, mud tyres and roof rack.
Yea, i tried doing 6 on the front too but ended up putting it in the too hard basket. Its possible that you could make a bracket and spacers like i did on the back but i think you might need to modify the hand rest and/or door handle.
There was a page i saw where someone talked about doing that if i find it ill share the link. From memory they cut another hole in the door and passed the wiring through that.
Yea thats the thread i was looking for. Tbh it doesnt seem worth it to me. Lot of effort for minimal difference. My 4 inch pioneer at the front sound pretty darn good. With those huge spacers you would always hit them and be a pain trying to open the door etc.
I suggest rather than go that effort buy a full roof rack so you dont have to load the rear of the car so much then you wont cover up the speakers
new pioneer 355bt deck no cd
replaced the front 4" with JVC 4" and found too much frequency so replaced it with 4" Alpines ...much better
had an 8" all-in-one sub installed under the passenger seat...the best sound upgrade. (got it from repco, was concerned about the quality at first, after hearing it, I am quite content)
