possible bearing noises tdi 300
hi to all can anyone help me with my problem my tdi 300 98 auto has developed a grating noise possibly a bearing on the water pump or alternator etc . my question is can i somehow isolate each peice one by one and run the vehicle so i can pick which piece is faulty, can i fit a form of a belt as to drive one of the parts therefore not having the other going. not really sure its one of these pieces but the sound does sound like its coming from from one or the other .thanks again .cheers

NOISE
I would take the belts off and inspect the items separately.I had a grinding noise once and it was the alternator which I replaced. The water pump can be a prob as well as the bearings in the belt torsioner[usually squealing].The air con belt bearing as well. These are all easy fixes.Theres plenty of help on this forum.

Try a long screw driver place the blade on the water pump housing and listen put your ear to the other end then try the same with the alt you will hear which one is making the noise
Or you can buy a mechs stethoscope from super cheap
