    3.5 V8 tidy up.

My Disco has done almost 300,000 kms now and I have done nothing to the engine (3.5 V8 ) apart from normal services etc. As you can imagine it is getting a bit tired although it still runs fine and does not use oil. I have been offered another engine which has much lower kms and is in quite good order. I am thinking of getting this engine and stripping it for a check over. While I have it apart I would like to maybe replace the cam with a better one and any thing else that you blokes would suggest. Probably put in new rings, bearings and seals etc. Any suggestions or advice? It would be nice to get it going a little better than standard as I tow with the car.

If it's a tow car, have you considered going to a 3.9 or 4.6 engine?

As the 3.5 is generally considered the most reliable of the LRV8s I'd stick with it, put in a new stock efi cam and maybe think of some higher compression pistons. Failing that put in a 4.2 stroker kit, that'll give it a bit of grunt. My mate's 4.2 converted RRC is ideal for towing.

Yes I like the reliability of the 3.5 also I have an LT77 g/box so a 4.6 might be a bit much for it. If I went higher compressiom will it still run on 91 RON? I am also thinking maybe a better timing chain and new lifters of course.

Sorry for the hijack - just wanted to clarify something.. Bee Utey, looking at the PDF, the stroker kit says it fits the 3.9/4.2 or 4.0/4.6 blocks. Will this crank go into the 3.5 the same as it would in a 3.9?

Been thinking long and hard about rebuilding the spare 3.5 I have into a stroker...

    Cheers - Gav

The crank should fit the 3.5 and 3.9 the same, the issues is in finding pistons to suit the rods. An old thread thrown up by google:

    4.2l stroker crank into 3.9l?

Finding an actual 4.2 stroker kit would be the go, otherwise a stroked 3.5 is just as simple as a P76 4.4 ......

I have been doing some research on cams for the 3.5. Seems the standard factory cam is pretty good anyway. Some people say a 3.9 cam works well in a 3.5. AFAIK the 3.9 has the specs as the 3.5 but has about 2 degrees more advance. Does that seem right? If that is the case I might just stick with the 3.5 cam and get an adjustable roller timing kit and set that with a bit of cam advance.

    3.5 cam ETC 6099
    3.9 cam ERR 5924

Does anyone have a factory cam spec chart?

    Any comments?? Please
